    Large lump on chicken's breast

Hmmm...I have a black australorp who has bilateral huge pendulous breasts. Her behavior hasn't changed although she makes odd swallowing type movements in her neck from time to time. Areas are both becoming firmer and her one of her neck bones seems out of place. She also smells of ketones...

    Hen acting like a Rooster

I think we have decided that the "hens" are actually roos. They don't have the multi-colored tail feathers but have large combs and battles...and they surely aren't laying! We have christened them Kaitlyn and Jenner.

Transit a second rooster back into coop

Good news! I put Jenner in a large dog kennel in the coop for a couple days...he learned his place quite nicely and all is back to pre-frostbite days in the coop! No more issues and a big relief! May have to try that with the other 2 that I keep separate from the rest of the flock. Thank you...

Transit a second rooster back into coop

Thanks all. I appreciate the input. Amazing how they have their own unique ways! I never wanted a rooster to begin with, but we ended up with Boris in a straight run-he is definitely my fave-big Buff Brahma and takes good care of the hens. He also has been carrying his weight with Jenner. The...

Transit a second rooster back into coop

And if I let them "fight it out" won't they kill each other or stand the potential to become seriously injured? Jenner is the one initiating the battle...

Transit a second rooster back into coop

We "adopted" 3 school hatched chicks last springs-turns out all 3 of those buff Orpington s were roosters. I have to keep the other 2 separate from the flock as they are very aggressive toward the others and we believe they actually killed one of the hens. They never messed with Boris though...

Transit a second rooster back into coop

I had to take one of my roosters out of the coop to address some frostbite. He was only out of the coop a couple days, but as i am trying to move him back in , he is going after the primary rooster (Boris). They have not had any previous issues as number 2 rooster (jenner) was raised as a chick...

    Hen acting like a Rooster

This year we adopted 3 buff orpingtons that were school hatched: 2 hens and a rooster. We got them when they were still chicks and of course they were very docile with us. We all ready had established chickens of several breeds and a Buff Brahma rooster. One of the BO hens starting crowing...

    ugh...now what??

So far so good but not for long! They are contained in a small fenced area attached to the coop. Afew times since my original post a couple have flown over the fence but have stuck close to home. I will be exchanging some fencing tonight as I just cant let them hang out in that small space. We...

    ugh...now what??

Thanks...the neighbors get all the eggs they could wish for! As the chickens were growing, he would come over about once a week and ask if we had eggs yet! Don't think we would have had an issue if they didn't poop! In any case we have a small fenced in area outside of their coop from when we...

    ugh...now what??

My flock of 18 have been free ranging since they were fully feathered...so about 4 months. We have 13 acres and neighbors on both sides but at a considerable distance. Originally the chickens stuck close to home and basically did "rounds" around the house. They have definitely expanded their...

    whole kernel corn

A friend of mine told me that I should not be tossing out whole kernel corn (dried field corn) for my chickens to have for an occasional treat because "they r unable to digest it ". Is this true? Does it have to b cracked corn? They gobble up afew pieces and return throughout the day for afew...
