Dumor is all I feed from start to finish, starter, then starter grower, then layer, the ducks were on grower/finisher. my chickens lay better on the dumor vs Purina.
Purina is more expensive, and as far as smell i have not noticed any worse than any other chickens / coops.
I Just tore out a timer that was in my chicken coop that did almost exactly what you describe, it looked like it shut off 6 of the 8 lights then the last 2 later. It actually controlled 2 lighting circuits. It had a date saying it was installed in 1956! I didn't check to see if it was still...
I like my red stars, (red sex link) I have white leghorn, rhode island red and Red Stars. I am working my flock around to 100% Red Stars. Friendly, docile chicken that lays large brown eggs and good numbers. my 25 lay approx 20-25 a day.
I am looking for a timer or some device to put on my fluorescent light that will turn it on at a set time, then dim the lights then shut off. Anyone know if this is possible??

i have red stars, leghorns, rhode island, and then a silkie bantam, and they all get a long good, I had a pair of silkie bantams but the rooster passed a month ago. but my silkie bantam(s) get along fine with the big ones. Hope that helps
I built my own feeder (out of wood) for the food, and put an 8 inch partition on each end, food in the middle (large) section and oyster shells on each end. this hangs on the wall so no spilling and no scratching all on the floor. This has worked well for me.

thank you for all the replies. the outcome has ben awesome they are laying well, and are happy helathy chickens they get layer now and then scratch as a treat and to "scratch" in on the floor.
my Rhode Islands and White Leghorns (just over a year old) all roost at night. but my younger Red Star (~3 months) only about half or so roost and my Buff Silkies so not roost at all they are approx. 3 months also.
I always wash mine off with a damp paper towel, I did not know about the warm/hot vs cold water, i will be using warm/hot from now on. But i guess it sounds like maybe it is not necessary to wash them
