What do you keep your oyster shell in?

I have a small flock of 10, so i just cut up a couple of tin cans (folded the edges) and screw them on the wall.

On the question wether grits are necessary, my understanding is that the grits (crushed granite) have certain abrasiveness that may not exist on the garden variety stones from free ranging.

I have a one quart plastic container and I poked a hole in one edge--I hang it on a nail with a large head right near the coop chicken door. I have 13 hens and I only have to refill it every six or seven days. I also never have used grit--our girls free range for several hours most evenings.

I use a 4" pvc end cap with a hloe drilled in top edge so I could screw it to the wall next to their food . It works just fine.

I built my own feeder (out of wood) for the food, and put an 8 inch partition on each end, food in the middle (large) section and oyster shells on each end. this hangs on the wall so no spilling and no scratching all on the floor. This has worked well for me.
