Weird: I can't eat my chickens' eggs! :-O

I have plans to make an omelet soon. I do hate how factory egg farms operate and how they treat their birds.

OP thought she'd get email notifications when there was a reply. OP was wrong. :(

No. I don't garden. Interesting thought, though. Edit: I grew a couple of tomatoes a few years ago and ate those with no problem!

Introducing chickens to a new run and coop?

I've read this thread but I have a question about the same subject. I have a new, small coop that will be used primarily at night. I have two Rhode Island Reds that have both started laying. I read that I should put them in the coop and leave them locked in for a few days. But where in the coop...

Weird: I can't eat my chickens' eggs! :-O

I didn't go out and get chickens. They sort of became mine accidentally. (Whole story here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/me.1210196/ ) They started laying and now I find that I can't eat the eggs! Nothing wrong with them. I just have this weird psychological thing about eating the...

    Going from freerange to coop

Thanks to you all for your replies. I got a pretty big coop for only two chickens - the biggest one I could afford. I hate the idea of forcing them to be in there for a week or so, but I guess that's the best thing to do. They won't understand that it's "for their own good"! Thanks again...

Hardware cloth on the ground: Why?

Okay, well, I had no idea. Thank you all for the education.

    Going from freerange to coop

I have two Rhode Island Reds that, until now, have been 100% free range. I'm getting ready to put up a coop for them. I'm just wondering how they might react to going from free range to coop after such a long time. (They're still under a year old but both have started laying.) I also want them...

Hardware cloth on the ground: Why?

I'm getting ready to put up a coop for my two Rhode Island Reds. I saw a post where someone has hardware cloth on the ground. The photo looked like the cloth was around the outside of the coop but not actually on the ground inside the coop. Would someone please explain why I would want to put...

Scratch Feed vs. Pellets, and Oyster Shell

Thank you for that quick response. I'll get some crumbles next time, and put the oyster shell in a separate bowl, like you do. Thelma and Louise are laying hens, and at least on of them (Thelma) has started laying. Thanks again.

Scratch Feed vs. Pellets, and Oyster Shell

This will give you my background. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/me.1210196/ My two chickens aren't really mine. I bought some food for them - I guess you call it "scratch feed" because it's grains and such. I bought a smallish bag of DuMor Five-grain "Premium" scratch feed. Seems...

First Egg and now 100 new questions

Thelma hasn't been spending a lot of time on that nest. I've collected all but two of the eggs. I don't have a problem with her laying in that location. I can't coop her since she isn't officially my bird. It is possible that two birds have been using that nest, but I've seen no evidence of...

First Egg and now 100 new questions

Well, Thelma got up to walk around a bit and I found this. She's been busier than I thought!! I guess one of my questions has been answered. :-D

First Egg and now 100 new questions

Okay, not 100, but a few. One of my adopted chickens has laid her first (probably) egg and now I find I have new questions. Will she continue to sit on this egg? How long? Will she continue to lay in the same location? (She's under a bush in my front yard.) And if I take this egg from her...
