Raising baby chicks in the winter?

I am interested to see how that plays out for you. We have stupid cold winters here in Calgary and my flock are in an insulated coop piled with straw and more (the nice ones who all get picked on :( are in a barn - not insulated but warm with straw. I don't heat either. The universe knew what it...

    Male? Really?

Thanks. Yes over the last two weeks, he has taken over (albeit, nicely) the flock. He is like either of his suspected dads in this respect. (He is either Americana or Anacona and mum a BR.) He spends all day on patrol outside the coop while the others are inside staying warm. He is a massive...

    Male? Really?

He/She is huge and started crowing, but doesn't have the spurs at 5 months. Looks like saddle feathers too. Is that normal for a rooster - not to have spurs. All my other boys have them....

Can a broody chicken hatch duck eggs?

My hen hatched two chicks and a duck egg we put in. She killed the duck a day later. Not sure why but it was grusume and deliberate judging by the way we found the poor bugger. She is on three more that we will remove once hatched. :(. It's a sad day in Farmsville.

    Copper Sulfate

Hi, I have a bird with respiratory illness but seems fine otherwise. Our vets don't treat chickens???? And the city vet will but is costly. Can't buy antibiotics in Canada as it's not ethical to treat without knowing what it is...so they say. But it's ethical to let them die I guess. Any...

    Egg bound???

Does this look like egg bound? I cleaned it off and treating it. She is happy and eating and walks OK so wonder if she is just sitting in her poo. It's been stupid cold here until recently. I'm am also pretty sure she is laying still. None of the others are like this.

    No eggs suddenly

I have three Roos and six hens all under a year. The girls were laying one to two eggs a day and all stopped. About a week ago. It's been cold here but warmed up also about a week ago. They are in a warm coop with a skylight and window so get a lot of light and were giving eggs throughout the...

I need some winter tips please help

Does anyone know what will happen if I let a broody hen sit on fertile eggs if the hatch at this time if year. I'm in Calgary. Well insulated coop, well vented and never heated it with anything other than the water deicer. I am curious if they will survive.

Raising baby chicks in the winter?

I can't for the life of me figure out how to post my own thread so I am hoping to piggy back. I have a hen that is sitting on nine eggs right now and I wonder at what point should I bring the eggs inside or should I just let them hatch and see what happens? It is stupid cold here but they are...

eggbound banty PIC IS KINDA GRAPHICFOR WEAK STOMACHES

Curious. How is your bird doing now? We get some weird size and shapes from our plymouths. They have calcium, layered ration, hay and scraps all the time. Happy and healthy but I wonder if shapes and size of eggs indicate this happening. I would not want to lose my feather kids either.

    Name that chicken

Finally getting some eggs but haven't figured out who is giving me the tiny purple brown ones out of this bunch. The rose comb gives white ones, Plymouth insanely huge brown but who for the recent. Duckwing?
