Extra egg membrane on the outside of the hardshell egg

(I'm not sure if you can upload videos) But I decided to open it up. I expected it to be a normal egg inside but nope....and it was nothing but runny yolk and lots of it!!! The whole shell was full of yolk.

Extra egg membrane on the outside of the hardshell egg

We've had chickens for about 7 years and this is the first time I've seen an egg membrane encasing a hardshell egg! It's crazy weird. It came from our 1 year old Salmon Faverolle. Is this just a quirk in the egg laying system for the day or is it something more serious that we need to look into?

    Feather Loss

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any thoughts are appreciated.

    Feather Loss

Hi, thanks for the reply. l'll try to answer each of your questions the best I can. My birds do not have a specific dust bath area but their run is all dirt and I see them bathing in it regularly. I have not noticed them excessively preening themselves and the feather loss I have seen is...

    Feather Loss

I haven't seen them eating feathers but it definitely looks like they are broken. I'll try to take a picture of her in the morning. I feed them layer pellets with a 16% protein. They occasionally get scratch but definitely not every day and every so often they get dried mealworms. That's...

    Feather Loss

They do not free range. They have a nice size run but not somewhere to really hide a nest. I wondered about molting but one of our chickens neck feathers definitely looked broken, like maybe she was pulling them out. If it was molting would they all do that at the same time and in the same...

    Feather Loss

Hi, I have 7 chickens all just over 1 yr old. The last two months 5 of them have had significant feather loss on their chests. I've looked for mites/lice on them several times, both during day light hours and night time but have never seen any bugs on them. We did treat them with Poultry...

    Barren Chicken?

My question is, how long do you wait before you consider your chicken barren? We have an Asian Blue chicken that is almost a year old and she still hasn't laid any eggs for us. She's "nested" since she was about 6 months old but never leaves an egg. Normally our chickens free range but we...

Chickens not laying eggs yet, what to feed them

Thank you for the additional info. And picture, very helpful. I checked my girls and 5 of the seven have points that are spread. Two of which I know are actually laying. We go on egg hunts often but have never found any secret stashes. So, i think we will try keeping them confined again but...

Chickens not laying eggs yet, what to feed them

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I will probably switch my feed for now and see if that helps at all. Several of the birds have very nice red combs and one has even been "nesting" for a few months but nothing yet. They do free range but we kept them in the coop/run to see if they...

Chickens not laying eggs yet, what to feed them

We have 7 chickens, all about 27 weeks old and only two are laying. We have 2 asian blues, 2 rhode island reds, 2 easter eggers and 1 rainbow dixie. I know i have to be patient, which is killing me, seems like they'll never lay, but my question is what should I be feeding them. Or does it...

    Feather Loss (Not moulting)

Thanks so much for your help. Its nice to know it's not anything to worry about. And yes all of our chickens are about the same age except the two smallest. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure that our cute little "Lemon" (the name we originally gave her) is a "Leonard" haha. We'll hold on to...
