Oooh interesting. Hmmm. I'm looking. I was considering getting another 2 from the same person I got these from because of their smaller size compared to other feed stores young chickens.
Well well well, what do we have here?
I decided to quarantine Rosie (b/w hen) today without food and limited water (it's texas and hot!). There's a fan going on in the coop and she still has access to a 3x5 run but I'm keeping the water down there so she has to come out of the coop. Almost as soon as I quarantined her she got in the...
Not yet. They have both food and water in the coop currently. Putting them outside instead today and tonight. They are still going to free range most of the day and I'll start the test this evening.
Morning!
Preface: new chicken owner.
I've noticed Rosie has been spending most if her time in the coop, roosting into the morning and earlier than red. @aart pointed out her abnormally large crop could be of concern. Here she is this morning. I also feel she hasn't laid in almost a week as...
@aart Hmmm. Keeping an eye on it. Shes not been as vibrant the last few days either. Gonna check this morning and try taking food out if the coop tonight to see how it looks in the morning. Thoughts?
This is what I looked up and read...
I'm probably going to build a nesting box on the otherside to match. Though this isn't intended to be a long term coop, a few months maybe until I design and build one I'm actually happy with.
Are broody hens like that long term? I'm still learning of course. Skimmed a few articles on it. Does seem like it might not be worth the effort. Thanks for helping me identify them.
Thanks for the warnings on the age. I've been reading up on age related issues, the worry of the resources a non-producing hen would take up and what she's offer to the flock's happiness (or lack of) or worms. Hmm.
I just expanded it with a 2x2 nesting box but yeah, it's only 3x3 on the inside...
I might be taking these two girls on soon. The red one's about 5 years old, and the black/white one is 2-3 years old and is described as getting broody often.
Anything I should take into consideration? Can you help me figure out the breed? This is the only picture I got.
