My three year old just LOVES our chickens! We have had them a year now and they are great. This is Daniel's favorite chicken. He named her "Cranie". And I don't know what that means! Hehe!
We have only had chickens about a year now and I was so surprised! I never thought she could be fast enough to catch a mouse and then she wanted to eat it. I ended up taking it away because I wasn't sure about get eating a mouse (disease??). But it sounds like it's okay! I'll let her keep her...
Okay! Thank you! They do have the choice to go in or out and they seem happy. We do have about 3 inches of snow on the ground now. Actually, when the snow really stuck is when they quit hanging out outside.
Is this normal? We have 8 chickens. 4 of them are 8 months old and four are 1 1/2 years. They are all cold weather breeds (chosen with our Michigan winters in mind!). It's been really chilly this week and they have not come out of their coop, into their run, hardly at all! They may come out to...
Thanks so much for the input! A roof for the coop will be our solution. Enclosing the space at the top is a great idea. That way, they can still rafter roost and it will still be tall enough in there for my boys to get in to clean. And we can take it back down in the spring. Perfect!
We have eight hens. Their breeds were all chosen with cold weather in mind, so they are all supposed to be hearty for winter. We have a 16x12 run with an 8x5 coop. Right now, the coop does not have a roof, but it is under the roofed half of the run. The girls like to roost in the rafters, even...
Okay! Thanks!
I have two others that have the pea comb, grey legs, and black with greenish feathers. This one is my EE, right? They both lay green eggs and were sold as "Americauna" at the feed store.

I'm guessing EE, based in everything I've read here.
We added four new girls to our little flock. The friends we got the hens from said they were told two of them are Isa Browns. But these hens don't look like isa browns to me. They look just like many ee pics I've seen. Or Americauna...still...
We are eggcited at our little homestead! Today we got 4 eggs! And we have another girl laying green eggs, too. Hers are tiny, though. So we think we have 5 of our 8 girls laying eggs now. It was loud out in the chicken run/coop today! Now I know why. Big chorus of egg songs going on!
Okay great, thanks! We got two small eggs and two big eggs yesterday. We think two of our originals are now laying and two of the new older ones. The kids (and me!) are so excited!
Now we know it's normal to take some time for them to settle in. Hopefully the others start taking soon too.
We have four pullets that were hatched in April. We had a rooster that we had to cull because he was too aggressive with the chickens and the children. A few days later, we adopted four hens from some friends. They were laying already. We figured with the rooster newly gone and a new pecking...
