Thanks for the suggestions BuffOrps32! We got them from Meyer Hatchery, hatched early November 2018. The Buff Orpington is the leader of the flock for sure. He likes to follow me around the yard, hoping for treats. (If you've never seen a huge fluffy BO come running full speed toward you for a...
Hi All,
I need to rehome my two cockerels, a Buff Orpington and an Easter Egger. They're about five months old and just too much for my hens! We're west of Fort Worth, Texas, and willing to drive within reason.
I think everyone worries! And you're a good "mom" to be checking in and asking questions :) In those first few days it seems almost impossible that chicks could ever survive in the wild without human intervention.
...sooooo true!!!! hahahaa
The hatchery does sell Black Sumatra, so it's possible. Her body shape reminds me of a Sumatra, and she is a bit more flighty and active like I guess that breed usually is, but as a chick her markings and coloring didn't look like a Sumatra to me (I'm no expert though, obviously! All I've ever...
It looks like a pea comb to me, but it's still so small that it's hard to see, and she wants to peck the phone when I take pics, it's hard to get a good shot. This could be an example of what people mean when they say "hatchery quality" chicken, she might just be what my dad always called a...
Do you have a thermometer in the brooder? If they're in their first week they need to have 95-100 degree temps. Also maybe check that their water isn't cold? The cold water takes down their body temp pretty quickly. If the temperature is good, check to be sure that they're pooping. If they were...
I hope it's not male! I'm already trying to rehome the extra one I have. These pictures might be a bit more clear. It's hard to get a good shot, they're out puddle jumping after last night's big storms.
If you don't have any of the recommended vitamins or electrolyte supplements on hand and can't get them quickly, I've used this recipe from Prairie Homestead on a struggling chick and it did help:

Hi All,
We got a mystery pullet from the hatchery, the black one on the left of the picture. Any idea what she is? We're new to this and are still learning, right now our best guess is Jersey Giant...she's smaller than everyone (we actually call her Smalls), but I've read the Jersey Giants...
Sorry! That info would probably help! I'm just west of Fort Worth. I drive to Terrell regularly and could meet someone anywhere between here and there. If I could find him a good home I'd be willing to drive as much as an hour in any other direction.
