I picked up my 8 chicks yesterday. 3/12. They quickly settled down and began drinking and eating. I kind of thought the 250 watt bulb was a bit hot but the chicks did not move out of the area so i figured all was good. They have a large brooder area about 4.5 feet by 3.5 feet. There is a brinsea in the coop that i saw a few coming in and out from under. Saw them during the night sleeping or standing quitely not in distress. This morning i went to change the water and they ran in panic to the far side of the coop. That arwa is about 60 degrees. They heaped in a pile so i tried to leave them alone for an hour hoping they would move back to the warm. After 2 hours and some prodding i could not get them to move. So i moved the light toward them and now they are moved apart not quite under the heat but in the general area They appear to be sleeping or lying down. Some are standing. They dont appear to be in distress but this is a huge change from yesterday.thanks

Are these day old chicks? Maybe block off a section of the brooder until they are a little larger. Still eating, pooping and drinking ok? Where are the chicks from? They are babies, so they will still do a lot of sleeping, but with periods of high activity mixed in.

Just sitting and sleeping. Yes i ca t think of muxh else at this point
Do you have a thermometer in the brooder? If they're in their first week they need to have 95-100 degree temps. Also maybe check that their water isn't cold? The cold water takes down their body temp pretty quickly. If the temperature is good, check to be sure that they're pooping. If they were sent from a hatchery they might have been exposed to some cold temps in transit, and that can give them pasty butt, preventing them from pooping.

Ok will check butts. I hate to stress them out even more. A visual looks clear. Do i need to part the feathers to get really close? Sorry but im not totally clear on what it should look like. Also need to take those stupid leg bands off.

Can you post photos of your chicks and brooder?

Are they eating/drinking at all?
