    Broody Pullet: Mottled Java

Hello, I've got a MJ born Aug 3, 2020 who started laying in Mid February 2021. -Went broody Mid-May -Introduced store-bought chicks May 27th, which she readily accepted after 2 weeks broody. -Had an INSANE heat wave (115 F) when chicks were 4 1/2 weeks old, MJ pullet rejected chicks and is...

Comment by 'Texas Transplant' in article 'Java Mottled Java'

I've got a Mottle Java pullet that will be a year old the first week of August. She went broody in May, I gave her 3 store bought chicks which she raised for 5 weeks and is now quite aggressive to them (the rest of the flock will not allow her to roost with them because she is too mean to the...

Please help! Chicken suddenly gasping but otherwise alright

So sorry to hear that, her symptoms sounded like she might have been contagious, it might be worth sending her out for testing/necropsy if your other chickens are showing any of her symptoms. Again, sorry for your loss.

Oh, sorry, I see you already looked down her throat, whoops, slightly delirious over here, we don't have air conditioning (never needed it before!).

Please help! Chicken suddenly gasping but otherwise alright

Glad to hear the temperature has gone down....sadly, we're still hovering at 106 at 5:30 :( It'd be worth trying to open her mouth and see if there is something stuck in her throat (it does happen)....otherwise there are a number of things it could be (gapeworm etc). I've read articles that say...

What do I call these chicks

They should be sexlinked so, you'll be able to tell what gender they are. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/buff-orpington-and-barred-rock-cross-is-it-a-sex-link.290379/

Please help! Chicken suddenly gasping but otherwise alright

There are others that will have more expertise but, I wanted to get back to you since your bird sounds like she is in crisis. If she has a small comb she may be over heated. I live in Central Oregon and I just dunked my girls (no higher than the wings) in a bucket for a minute in cool (not cold...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

1 out of 4 pullets that starting laying Mid-October, it's been about a week like this. The sun goes down around 4:30 these days :(. I've got 3 20week old pullets, fingers crossed it'll be sooner rather than later when they start laying (I'm not holding my breath, I live in Zone 5b/6a).

    Pros, Cons, and General Comparison

I find Dominiques to be more harmonious flockmates over Barred Rocks. If you're wanting a dark brown egg from a hatchery Marans, you may be dissapointed....best to find a breeder. DL Silverlaced Barnies are good flockmates and are decent layers/meat. Good luck in your chook adventure :)

The Saga of Daria: When will she heckin’ lay?!

Since the days are still getting shorter through the 21st of December, my guess would be late January/early February. The waiting can be SO tedious !:fl

    Betta fish questions

This might help: https://www.thesprucepets.com/sponge-filters-1381207 The type I'm referring to is super basic like the AQUANEAT Aquarium Bio Sponge Filter....generally under $10 for 60 gallons or smaller....(you'll still need an appropriately sized air pump and some cheap tubing). (Whole...

    Betta fish questions

Not necessarily, depends on how strong and waterproof/resistant your furniture is . 1 gallon of water is about 8 pounds x how many gallons the tank is + weight of substrate etc = total weight
