Old thread but was never really answered, so here goes.
This is what happens in a week or so when you mix raw, unprocessed quail poo with some BSF larvae.
I was fully expecting to be called out to rescue some of them. They can certainly be noisy when they want attention! But they came out on their own when the food ran out. When I refilled it, only one could fit back through the holes to eat inside, the rest had to stand around and use the...
OK, I'll post some updates in the Jungle Fowl thread and try to stay on hatching quail topic here. But yes, I caught 2 wild hens and a roo, and successfully hatched their eggs, currently have about a dozen chicks.
No. Thailand doesn't have many things you can easily get in the USA. DIY is a necessity here. The eggs came from a random seller on our Chinese based equivalent of Amazon.
Round 2.
Just built this foam cabinet incubator and giving it a test run. Mixed coturnix in the front row, white in the back, and Jungle Fowl in between. First batch of 20 in previous incubator yielded 13 of 23, but the three smallest failed to grow and died after a few days. They were...
Had my first ever quails hatch. Now at 10 days old I put them in a cage along with food and water. A few hours later and I look to find most are missing? After I did a double take I realised my mistake... How many quails do you find?

Now I know what happens to Styrofoam containers when you keep chickens in them... somebody described it as Styrofoam = chicken popcorn.... But how about Coturnix? Do they peck at it also or could you make brooders with Styrofoam walls? Anyone have experience of using Styrofoam wallboard to...
Hamster/puppy cage converted to Jungle Fowl brooder. Cover for feeding station is removable, made from 2" PVC pipe slipped over 1.5" PVC pipe trough. Watering station is one piece.
Never a dull moment now that I've added poultry to my hobbies. One of the ducklings I hatched had a wonky spraddle leg, but seemed to be able to get around so I let him/her mix with the other siblings. Apparently, the leg gave out, I came home from a day trip yesterday to find it layinng next...
Sadly, my first ittle chick never did learn to eat, and eventually died. I think she might have made it if she'd had any siblings to teach her how to scratch and peck, but on her own she failed to figure it out. Or had no appetite. I don't know.
My second attempt at hatching was much more...
