    Im going to try that! Should I get them an actual sand bath? They free range in the front yard where we have sandpits they bathe in but that's it.

    Are there any small breeds of chicken that aren't bantams? I need pullets, but there's only one place that sells sexed bantams (at around ten bucks per chick).     Mama knows best ;) she'll teach them what's ok and not ok to eat, and the more food options, the better. Chickens....better than tv.

    Ah, maybe it's just not enough room for them. Barred rocks arent supposed to have black feet at all; I've heard the 'hens only' but haven't found anything that it's a gender specific trait. See the rounded, tilted feathers on his back? Saddle feathers...and the crowing isn't a 100% giveaway...

    I have too much land for raised beds :P mulch just encourages more weeds...but I try it anyway. I'm letting wild violets take over some sections, but there's still so much ground to cover. Turn around and the part I just cleared is choked with grass, stick burrs and mustard...sweetening the soil...

    What I did...cried. Too many weeds, not enough time, cover crops won't grow in our sandy soil. Uuggghhhhh

    The store we got them from said they only sold Standard Bronze and White Holland this year. We got one of each. Hmm.

    Yes, especially in absence of a rooster, a hen can crow (I even had one who would mount other chickens). Look for a deeper red/larger comb and saddle feathers for a boy. It's a little hard to tell from the angle but that bottom chicken looks like a roo. Do you have anymore pics? What kind of...
