I accidentally got a Silkie rooster, since you can’t tell what they are when they are hatched. I have several other chickens besides silkies, we have 6 other breeds of chickens (Americaunas, Brahma, Buff Orpingtons, Wyandotes, Green Olivers, and one female Silkie) including his female...
I was talking about washing my silkies, I would never wash any of my other chickens. I also don’t kiss my chickens, I just thought it was weird that other people were doing it. I know that is bad. Thank You!
I was reading that the CDC said not to hug your chickens because they can carry salmonella, but I keep finding videos of people hugging and kissing their chickens. Is it a major deal to hug your chickens?
P.S.- I have 2 silkies and they are super fluffy, I can’t resist hugging them. I know I...
You can mix breed chickens, just like a dog. You need to do some research on certain breed mixes. For example, a Frizzle is a mix. Just be careful about mixing chicken breeds, you mix the good and the bad; sometimes the bad can be overwhelming.
I just read your part about the leg bending the wrong way. I looked at a few diagrams of a chicken’s legs and bones. Her actual bone may not be broken, I could be the knee socket that holds the two bones together isn’t doing its job. I would definitely see about going to a bird hospital. It...
It would be nice if there was a photo. She is over a month old! It might be too late. I know for the human body if a bone breaks and the doctors don’t put it in a cast within a few weeks, it will heal wrong. Her leg could have been permanently healed wrong, which would require surgery. I would...
Silkies(black and tan), they are sooooo fluffy! I have two! I also like Buff Orpingtons, they are sooo friendly. I like Dominiques, I had one that survived practically being ripped apart by my dog. She was named Oreo, ironically she died two months later from my neighbor’s dogs.
I have 15 new chicks (ranging from 1 week old to 2 months) that need another coop. I have one coop already from having 5 chickens that died, but it can only hold 5 chickens. Anybody have any ideas or good coop ideas that would cost less than $300?
You will also need to put ALOT of bedding down or ALOT of sand/dirt to help with cleanup and to make it more like the dirt. You would need to cover all the concrete because ducks can get bumble feet from it (I read more about it from some books and websites).
I would recommend putting a few shower towels on the ground so they can have a little soft something to be on. It might get a little dirty on the concrete because of their poop though. I don’t have ducks (I have 15 chickens), but I know chickens like to have some soft ground so their feet don’t...
We have a thermometer, but it is a little funky. It usually reads around 95F, but it gone from 70 to 130 in a few minutes. So, I don’t know if it is trustworthy. Right now it reads around 95.
