    Carnivores Waking Up

Thanks. haha I actually grow them inside throughout the year. I live at the coast so the weather during winter is really bad. And today we have east-wind which means a sand storm and about 25 degrees celcius even though it's still winter. The weather in this town is way too unpredictable to keep...

    BYC gardening thread!!

Has anyone here ever planted granadillas/passion fruit from seeds? Our plant is pretty huge and has yellow fruit. I washed and dried the seeds of two fruit. Half of the seeds I've soaked in warm water over night and planted the seeds in pots (12 seeds/pot), the other half I put into wet paper...

    Carnivores Waking Up

Wow those are awesome plants! Do you sell them of are they just a hobby for you? About two years go I bought a Drosera capensis and some type of Nepenthes which died pretty quickly. I suppose where I live Nepenthes don't grow easily haha. But the sundew did quite well. In the first winter it...

    Will broody hen adopt chicks?

hi, I might be too late but I'll just go ahead and answer anyways. I would say 3 weeks is already too long. Especially if the new chick is younger than the rest. Even if it's the same age the hen with her chicks will probably kill it.

    How old are my chicks?

They look very nice. I'd say somewhere between 1 and 2 weeks maybe.

    what killed my ducks???

I might be dead wrong on this but if I remember correctly I think I might have read somewhere that the ripped off head is usually because of a raccoon. Sorry about you'r ducks....it always sucks to loose a bird(s)!

How many can one lay a day??

hmm my first guess would be that some other hen might have sneaked in during that time and quickly laid an egg while you weren't watching. I've heard of many double yolked eggs which is usually what happens when two ovaries are released at the same time. I suppose it might, perhaps, be possible...

    Silkie hatching a quail egg?!?!

Are you sure? I put the egg into a cut up ping-pong ball. It's been under the hen for the past 4 days and it is still alive and growing. Should hatch any day now if everything goes well.

    Roosters??

If you hear them crowing or trying to crow they are definitely roosters. It's kind of hard to tell by those pics (for me at least) but if you say that the back one crows and the other one tries to crow then they are rooster 100%.

    Silkie hatching a quail egg?!?!

My button quail hen recently hatched one egg and kept sitting on two more which are both fertile but at different stages. One should hatch in about 5 days and the other might still take another 10. It seems like the quail hen stopped sitting. I have a silkie which is broody but has no eggs so I...

Hen has abandoned her last 5 eggs

Sounds good :) congrats on the chicks! Just one last tip: Be very careful when you let the chicks and their mother to the rest of the flock. My first 8 chicks I ever had got completely eaten by other hens. So when you do let them out stay with them for an hour or so outside just to see how the...

Hen has abandoned her last 5 eggs

Hi. I had about the same situation with just one egg though. If the egg is cold/cool to the touch because the hen was off feeding with he hatched chicks I'd immediately take the egg(s) and put them under a heat lamp with a thermometer on top of a wet towel. I didn't have a heat lamp and first...
