I have a hen that's been broody for nearly a week and I'm wondering what would happen if I bought a few day old chicks from the feed store and stuck them under her while she's sleeping. Has anyone tried anything like this with any success? Or is it just a bad idea...any thoughts or suggestions...
This may be an incredibly green horn question but I don't know the answer so I'm asking anyway! :) We keep our coop very clean but despite our best efforts, every now and then the chickens get poo on the egg shells. Are they safe to eat when there is poo on the shell? Is it any safer if I wash...
I'm tired of playing the 'is it a roo or is it a hen' game! Our space is too small to keep more than one rooster and I'd prefer not to have any but my rate of roosters is very high every time I choose more chicks. Sooo....I really like my Red Sex Links for brown egg laying, I'm wondering if...
Yeah, I do have other chickens. That was my main concern. So I guess I have at least a month or more before they move out. I didn't time the purchase of these guys very well. I was hoping to move them out BEFORE the weather starts to get cold. Lesson learned.
Mine are 6 weeks old, off the light and fully feathered out. I don't want to be too quick but they are outgrowing our makeshift brooder and I'm curious what the youngest age is that you've been succesful with transferring to the 'big girl' coop?
These are pics of my 4 day old chick from Meyer hatchery. I ordered cuckoo marans, easter egger and gold laced Wyandotte, I didn't order any frizzles. This chicks wing feathers seem to be curling up and none of my other chics (ever) have done this. Do you think it could be a frizzle? Also, which...
The 3 EEs in the pictures (two red and 1 white/black) are all 10 weeks old. The black and white is the one in question, his comb seems slightly more prominent and from reading a few things on here it seems that his color combo is usually a roo. What do you think?
Thanks guys...I'm bummed because I already ordered EEs from Meyer that are coming in a couple months. I'll get over it though because they are too stinking cute. Any idea when I might be able to tell roos from pullets and what to look for in EEs? They were sold as pullets but I've been down this...
I got them at a local pet store sold as Ameracauna pullets...do you think they are right? I was surprised to see three different colors, but I'm new to the chicken world, so maybe they DO come in that many variations. Anyway, they are 12 days old and I was just curious what you all thought...Thanks!
I'm very new to the chicken world and I'm starting to wonder if one of my 4 girls might be a rooster. He/she's always been bigger than her sister, but seems to be growing a lot faster now and the comb is becoming way more pronounced than any of the others...what do you think? The one in question...
