There was no charge. I don't know if it is just in California, but the UC labs around here will provide some free services to folks raising chickens at home. I think they actually call it the backyard chicken program.
They are all standard size birds. I have a feeling that Alfred was the top hen, so she probably ate more than the others. On top of that, I am unfortunately unable to let the girls roam my yard all day. They may not be getting enough exercise. Do you folks have any recommendations for ways to...
I got a preliminary report back the other day from the California Animal Health and Food Safety Lab at Davis. Basically, it indicated that Alfred was obese, some trauma caused her liver to rupture, and she died of internal bleeding. Here's the case summary:

Death is attributed to a...
Thanks for the advice. I took her out of the freezer when I got home. She didn't seem frozen, so hopefully they can still test the body properly. I just dropped her body off at the after hours thing at Davis. Hopefully they will get back to me soon.
My 7 month old easter egger, Alfred, died at some time early this morning. When I went into the coop this morning to let the chickens out, she was on teh coop floor, dead but still warm. I looked her over and didn't see any obvious injuries or signs of illness. She seemed fine yesterday morning...
Here are a couple photos I took of the nest box addition this morning. I need to put a little work into the finish, but it is basically done.
Coop access doors with newly added nest box.
Wide shot of the coop under my back deck.
Thanks for the positive feedback. If I make it home before it gets dark some time this week, I'll try to get some updated pics.
Here are the tenants, Batman, Robin, and Alfred, just moved in at 2 weeks old.
Feed and water hanging under the coop.
About 3 weeks old.
Almost 2 months...
I'm pretty new here, but the advice in advice given in some of the posts has really helped me with my first mini flock. I got three chicks back in July, and started building a coop and run for them that same weekend. Because my neighbors' houses are all very close to my backyard fence, the only...
I'm not an expert, just got my first egg last week, but in the week or two prior I noticed that the chicks were acting different, in a manner similar to what you described. They started making the dinosaur sounds, kind of a drawn out, high pitched growling. Then, they started following me around...
Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I guess there really isn't a good way to tell at this point other than to wait her/him out.
Lovinlife, thanks for all the photos. They're very pretty. I can see that your pullets were much further along than my little one is at three weeks.
This is my first post here. I bought three chicks from a local feed store about three weeks ago. I've been reading through a lot of the posts here, and I believe that one of my chicks, Robin, the silver laced wyandotte, is a rooster. She/he is growing more slowly than the other two chicks...
