The animal control people came calling again. It seems the woman at the far end of our block had been haranguing the police about my darn chickens in the street. We had already gotten the rooster, General Grant, up to South Coffeyville OK where we left the big noisy one and got the pullet...
Well. I had a visit from the animal control lady a couple days ago. Seems some A--H--- neighbor filed 2 complaints about our chickens in a residential neighborhood. She said I could keep them in a chicken wire enclosure in the back yard as long as it is 100 ft. away from the nearest house...
Well, our first-hatched made the first day. I think Tigger, our skinny little tabby got tired of waiting for the Wildebeest heard and chomped down on the peeper. Anyhow it is apparently gone and Henrietta, the bearded lady is strolling around with Gen. Grant. Curious to see if she gave up...
Today Gen. Grant's lil bearded lady hatched her first chick. Cute little dude as far as I can see in fleeting glances as it disappears into the holly bush and Mom Russet and dark, a bit scruffy so far. Pix when more come or I can get near it. Looks like a dead one in the nest, or what's left...
I had two great grand fathers who served proudly in the Confederacy. one under Stand Waite in the 1st Cherokee Mounted Volunteers , and the other that sat it out in a Yankee prison, walking home after it was over. As I stated elsewhere, it does my soul good to have a CHICKEN named Gen. Grant...
Here are a couple of shots of the Winter coop I set up for Gen Grant and Henrietta, the bearded lady Now if it just meets their approval. She at present spends her nights as well as days sitting on a dozen or so future Republicans.
Today I cut a 9" wide door in a white plastic 55 gal. drum and ran a broomstick through it for a perch. I got an 8ft. treated 2X4 and sliced it down the middle and in half. A 2' 2X4 was lag-screwed to the inner legs and the outer legs through the inner ones into the 2X4 with 6" lag screws...
I stumbled on the Belgian bearded d'Anvir group and it seems consistant with Gen Grant. He has the single small comb, showy blue-black tail feathers and hackles, and russet body. The build is about right also. He is a magnificent animal and consistant with the "mainly decorative" use for...
We went to S. Coffeyville OK basically to pick up 5-doz. eggs and saw the noisey Smith Brother that we gave him. He looked GREAT and the way the hens followed him around, he looks like a rock star. FWIW He is only charging $1/doz for eggs, Mostly RIR and Barred Rock. I hope Gen. Grant hurrys...
My little RIR pullet is sitting on about 11 eggs behind the holly bushes next to the house. Assuming some hatch, will my cats leave the chicks alone like they do the chickens? Will the mother hen protect them? Do I need to gather them up in a box with starter feed and water or let the hen...
A neighbor down the street said he chaised some Mexican kids off that were chaising Gen. Grant, so yesterday when their whole family were in front of their house across the blvd. I stopped and told the dad that we had a problem with the kids trying to catch my PET rooster. It was a friendly...
Since we gave away the noisy bearded Smith Brother, the remaining one is now General Grant. Having had two great grandaddys in the Confederacy, having a chicken named General Grant somehow satisfies the soul.
For some reason today my rooster's beautiful blue/black tail feathers are flat gone. Is it possible he moulted in the heat or more probable some A--H--- tried to grab him? Maybe the animal control officer or likesuch? His girlfriend seems to have abandoned 10 eggs, but at 105 deg. I had just...
