Update, my hen pictured seems to be managing (yay!) and they are both on daily doses of Baytril. A new, sad turn of events is that her sister now has a puffed up right breast (I felt it, and it's very hard). Poor thing :( She was also making distressed chirps tonight :( Fingers crossed.
Hi there, I hope your little one is going okay. We recently went to the vet and got an antibiotic solution prescribed for my little hen, because she has a nasty bacterial infection named Mycoplasma Synoviae. I don't know much about chicken diseases but I would recommend noting her symptoms and...
Hey guys, an update on my hen: we gave her a second dose of baytril solution this morning (0.4ml) as recommended by the vet. My vet said to give each hen this amount for a fortnight. So her sister has also been treated.
In terms of straight away improvement, she has stopped gasping for air...
Hi @chickenfishfarm that is so upsetting, poor things :(
I know for a fact that chickens will often peck at one another's wounds (a lot of people on here use Blue-Kote to prevent that from happening). But to remove the entire foot, that seems a bit excessive...
As for the other questions...
Update:
She made it through the night and was enjoying some rice and yoghurt this morning.
Thanks for all your recommendations guys :) We were able to go to the vet with the symptoms, presumed disease (MS) and recommended antibiotic - thanks to your information.
She has had some now, we...
Oh that's so good :) I'm glad she's feeling better. How did you treat the scab? Also did you give her any antibiotics? We are getting the vet to check mine out in case of MS (to give her some baytril, on the recommendation of the Backyard Chickens community).
Thanks for your help @Eggcessive - I really appreciate it :) With your help, I can be fairly certain she has MS. Oh my, I've heard antibiotics can control the symptoms - but I wouldn't know the first place to start in Australia (being new to the chicken game, I only have two as pets, I don't...
Hi,
Did you ever find out what this is? My hen has EXACTLY the same thing. I am so worried for her, not sure she'll make it to the morning :(

After hearing from people on this site I have a strong feeling it's...
I just spent the night cuddling and stroking her. Her health had declined so much, she didn't want to drink any water, but she really enjoyed the yoghurt I gave her. I'm so upset because I don't think she'll make it :( She was gasping for air all night - more insight into her mystery illness, I...
Thanks @Eggcessive - I have my fingers crossed that it's just a pecking wound or something. There haven't been any other symptoms of MS, and the wound appears to be more of a closed scab than a blister. Poor baby, I am at work today - hope she manages alright.
Hi, did you ever find out the cause for this? It sounds like what has been happening to my hen (such a mystery!), I'll post the link to my thread for you to have a look at
PS: How did you go about treating it? https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/928392/mystery-wound-pictures-please-help
She could of hurt herself on the chicken wire fencing? Flew into a barb or something... Do you think I'm doing everything right for treating her? Thanks :)
Yeah... ahh I can't think of anything, they are in a completely enclosed run (mesh roof included!) and we lock them up at night in their little house. Unless something small got in, I really can't think of anything that would hurt her.
Hi everyone,
A couple of days ago I discovered my beautiful hen has a bald patch and dark red wound (it is not open, seems to be like a scab) under her left breast. It took me a while to find out because it was so well hidden. I feel that it started off small, but was made far worse by her...
