Question from post. It states, “Always provide insoluble grit free choice on the side” What is insoluble grit free choice? I have a mixed flock of 20, 12 teens, 6 laying hens and 2 roosters. They are all free range from morning to sundown. Feeding grower crumble & all flock and have oyster...

    Confused on all Flock Feed

I have the starter/grower. Can definitely do that until they start laying, but then still have the roosters. Guess I could stick with the starter/grower. Just need to figure out how to supplement calcium to the layers.

    Confused on all Flock Feed

I have a mixed flock, teenagers (8 weeks) laying hens and roosters. Have read that the calcium is not good for the teens or roosters and that I should use an All Flock feed and supplement calcium to the layers. The feed stores around here don’t appear to have any All Flock feed. I could feed...

Time to Integrate? Pics & Vids of Set Up

@Battlepants - Thanks, I’ll give it a go this weekend while I have the time to watch. I cut a wire door at the bottom of that partition, I can just make it smaller to allow them out & inn but keep the big ones out. That will give them a refuge the first week or so. May leave the partition...

Time to Integrate? Pics & Vids of Set Up

@Battlepants - Thank you! Do you think the roosters will be a problem with youngsters? We got the roosters 2 weeks ago. They were raised together and so far pretty easy going.

    Feeding Question

@rosemarythyme - I understand what you and @Kiki are saying now. I will change the feed out to the pellets only and when I mix in the youngsters will change it all to the starter/grower until the youngsters are laying. My chickens are free range as well, so they get much of their food when out...

    Feeding Question

@Kiki - I was feeding H&H Old Fashion Layer but it seemed 1/4 of the bags where dust. This caused problems because I use a feed box with ports, so all the dust would settle on bottom and chickens could not get to pellets. The two organic Purina feeds together have a mixture of seed and pellets...

    Feeding Question

Hi, I have 6 full sized hens and 2 roosters in my chicken coup. Currently I have a part of the coup partitioned off for the 6 younger chickens (8 weeks old). The younger chickens have separate food and water. I am currently feeding them Purina Start and Grow. The laying Hens are getting a...

    Foghorn Hen Picking on Rooster

@DobieLover - I will. I just went to the coop to check in the birds and noticed the rooster vigorously scratching that side of his neck. He also appeared to be pecking at it. Maybe it’s not Dolores pecking at him. I’ll have my wife take some pictures tomorrow. Maybe she can even sneak out...

Dolores, my Foghorn is neck picking my rooster when they are roosting. I don’t know how she always works her self into position on his passenger side but that side of his neck is getting torn up. Help! We love our rooster. Is it time to retire Dolores? Specifics: We have 1 rooster, 6 hens...
