I was just reading up on Silkies and kept noticing you can only buy them straight run. If I get 4 silkies, along with 8-10 laying hens, if I end up with a silkie rooster or two will the silkie rooster breed the other hens?

That's good to know. I didn't know there were white orpingtons. I'll have to check that out! Ahh he would LOVE a silkie! Great idea.

My son really wants a white chicken. We are just about to start our flock and plan to get buff orpington, easter eggers, dominique, and appenzellers. What white hen would be a good fit for a kid? White leg horn? White rock? Something else totally? :)

Is it possible to have a happy flock containing mixed size hens? Or will the smaller hens get picked on? My plan is to free range them during the day and build a large coop for the entire flock. Newbie chicken person here :)

I'd recommend a blue heeler or blue heeler mix. My heeler is very protective of her home, and her "cattle" whether the cattle are people or other animals doesn't matter to her. She's always on alert and is almost always positioned between her "cattle" and where she thinks any threat may come...
