When can i start feeding newborn chicks?

My Silkie hen just hatched 2 of her 3 eggs. The nesting box is about 4" off the floor. My question is how will they ever get out of the box (and back in for that matter) to get to the food and water? And my hen is so young I don't think she's interested in teaching them anything. What should I do?

    Silkie pictures! =)

What a beautiful chicken lot and house. Is your lot sand? Was that house originally a dog house? Love the colors and the windows. I'm in the Carolinas too and this is my first time raising chickens. Husband built my Silikes a "room" in my barn.

    turkeys

I'm new to poultry and have 5 Silkies which I've really enjoyed. I'd now like to try a turkey or two so here are my questions: Would I need to get 2 babies as companions (I plan to hand raise and handle often since I want a pet) or would one be ok alone? If I get 2 would they fight when older (I...

    Silkie thread!

I'm looking at all the beautiful Silkie pics on this thread and wondering.....When do the beards and top knots start showing? I'm new to chickens and have six 3 week old Silkies but I can only see a little poof on the heads of 2 blacks - the others have nothing. (though all are beginning to...

NPIP Certified and AI Free Bearded Silkie and Frizzle Chicks Day Old to 8 weeks

I really enjoyed my visit to East Coast Silkies. Your Silkies are thriving in a wonderful and clean barn and the adult birds are beautiful. I had been to other places but nothing competes with yours. The chicks I bought are healthy and doing well and I'm really enjoying working with them. It...

    Padding for concrete floor

Thank you and Liam too for the good advice! Anyone want to make suggestions regarding wood dowel rod roost - how high for Silkies? To seal or not for cleaning? Type of poop tray underneath rod? I'm so new to this all that I'm just learning the dif. between a hen and a rooster...LOL I just...

    Padding for concrete floor

The problem is I can't hose down the concrete - no drain. The coop is basically a 6x6 house/closet built into a corner of the barn with a closet door for me to enter and a chicken door to the outside for the chicks to enter their run. When I began this project I wanted a free standing coop but...

    Padding for concrete floor

We've just about finished our coop inside the barn. Since the floor is concrete I plan on putting down wall to wall vinyl but not adhering it. ( I might even put underlayment too.) I'm thinking if the fit is correct I won't need even trim to keep it down and I'm doing this because I may need...

Thanks for the info. I'm just hoping my Silkie chicks survive another week, then I'll move them to the coop, then 2 more weeks and they can tryout this gravel.

    driveway gravel

Thanks so much! I'll leave as is but once I get it enclosed with wire, if I need to remove it, it will be more difficult.

    driveway gravel

Hi, I'm new with this and am building a coop inside my barn. The chickens will exit the coop and be under the barn overhang (formerly used to shelter equipment) then they will be able to go onto a grass run. The overhang section they first go onto (about 8x8') has deep driveway gravel. Do I...
