I have just entered the strange world of home chicken ranching. Sounds so much cooler than chicken farming don't you think. I started with 9 ISA browns ( at least I think so). On a trip to the local farm store to pick up some fencing supplies, I mentioned to my wife that they were just going to...

Help me choose: Narraganset or Bourbon?

I raise narragansettes. They are a beautiful, gentle bird that free ranges well. Mine seem to get a bit larger than the reds I have raised in the past. They make great mothers as I hatch most eggs, but I do allow some hens to raise their own. They are great with children and we often have many...

    Rare Turkeys

My toms love to show off with all their strutting. Spring time is the season for turkey love. I keep mine off the ground until...

We went with Narragansettes. We just love them. Friendly and tame, they are great around children. Good tasting too. They are the oldest heritage birds in the country and back in 2003 there were only about 300 of them left in the USA. We feel like we are doing our part in bringing back this...

    Selling Turkeys for Thanksgiving

I get $6 a lbs for processed pasture fed heritage turkeys. I raise narragansette birds. 12 to 14 lbs range. Some in my area try to sell for a lot less their first year and then they realize they lost money. One guy was selling organic whites for $2.50 lbs. Probably cost him $4 a lbs to raise. I...

How do you CATCH your heritage turkeys?

My heritage turkeys come when you call them. And once on the roost its almost impossible to get them to move. I guess I am just lucky. They free range all day and fly up to a ridge beam across the chicken yard. At times they free range a lilttle too far so I just gobble them home. We hand feed...

Which is more economical...raising chickens for meat or turkeys?

chickens are more economical but turkeys are more fun. I have both chickens for eggs and narragansette turkeys for meat. I plan on adding meat chickens(free rangers) next year. If you are raising them for your own consumption I would raise both. Man cannot live by chicken alone. I love my...

I have 9 ISA Browns that give me 7 to 9 eggs every day. I give away 2 doz to my brother and 1 doz for my folks each week. Works out great. I have one chicken laying giant eggs. I cannot even close an egg carton over them. Always a double yolker. Each chicken has a different personality and are...
