I have never seen this before in any of my hatches. It’s day 8 so I’m doing my weigh in and marking air sacks. Well I noticed no veins near the air sack. So I moved my light around and I can see veins in the yolk area, and movement. So the chick is still alive however any movement of the egg and...
I started to notice some minor bruising and signs of shrink wrap in the little guy, so set up my little humid ‘assist’ nest and cracked his hole a bit. Membrane wasn’t too tight or dry but was tighter than it should be and a tiny bit more yellow than I’d like. Used a dropper to add a tiny dot of...
I have my first external pip for my ducklings! It pipped last night at 10pm, it is now 2:30pm. Unfortunately I can’t tell if the membrane was pierced. Little one is still wiggling around but no pushing against the shell. So still absorbing the yolk. But when do I get worried and make sure the...
Hi a couple days ago I noticed my Pekin had a swollen foot. Upon closer inspection I realized it looked like bumblefoot with a solid infection in the mass. However it is on top of her foot not the bottom. I gave her a nice soak got out as much of the infection as I could at the time and wrapped...
Ok so I’m on day 21 of hatching duck eggs. I have 4 magpie cross eggs and 7 Pekin cross eggs. Mommas are the magpie and Pekin, drakes were either black Swedish or khaki Campbell. Well my eggs have amazing growth, almost 100% blacked out and good movement.
However I’m worried they haven’t lost...
Luckily I will be checking them twice a week because we are doing this as a homeschool science project for my kids. They are doing the candling and recording their findings. We are on day 10 and so far have 11/14 doing really well!
So I am currently incubating duck eggs. 5 of them were laid by my magpie hen. I have 2 drakes, a black Swedish and a khaki Campbell. My magpie is not breed standard, so I’m not 100% sure she is purebred but believe she is as she matches a few of the magpies I have seen pictures of from both the...
So back in August I did a hatch. I wing sexed all my chicks as soon as they dried. I know this method isn’t 100% accurate. Well so far it seems to have been pretty accurate, my chicks were a staggered hatch as some were taken from a hidden nest under a shed that no chicken was sitting on and...
Omg look at the color pattern on this EE!!! She looks like a chipmunk! Naming this one Jeanette! The picture doesn’t show very well but she is gold, black brown and yellow!
Update on the last 4 eggs! They went into lockdown on Friday morning. One had pipped by 10am. By 10pm 2 more had pipped. At 6am this morning the first hatched. Around 4pm she was fully dry and got so excited to see us every time we came by. So we took her out to spend time with the family while...
Well I wound up putting the eggs in lockdown a little early. Surprisingly the one with the larger air pocket didn’t externally pip until just this morning, but one of the others pipped just 3 hours after I started lockdown. That one hatched at 6am this morning and woke me up 😂
I have 2 more...
I’m super excited to see how your hatch is going! I’m going to be trying ducks soon. Been doing staggered hatch chicks for a few weeks now. So far I have 100% hatch rate, only lost 1/6 post hatch, but that one was born with a deformity and we chose to cull it rather than have it live in misery...
