Keets, Pullets and summer heat -- still use a heater?

I’m sorry. I do not have a heater/heat lamp. I use a brooder plate. I’m thinking I should turn it on at night before I go to bed to ensure they are warm enough in the early morning. Just wanting to hear from more experienced folks.

Mistake? Pine shavings in brooder is a no-no?

I have lined my brooder with pine shavings and put 2 week keets and pullets inside the brooder this morning. Just now I read not to put anything in the brooder. Why are pine shavings not a good thing to use?

Keets, Pullets and summer heat -- still use a heater?

I have 10 pullets and 11 keets (about 2 weeks old). For two weeks I kept these birds in my laundry room and used a chicken heater to keep them warm. Today I moved them to an outdoor brooder that is well protected (in the fenced area surrounding the coop) and sits in the shade of a tree and...

Hurt guinea attacked and killed by other guineas. Why?

This helps a lot. Thank you. Now I have a plan for next time! I love having guineas!

Hurt guinea attacked and killed by other guineas. Why?

I’m only on year 1 plus with guineas. So thank you for this. I did think about separating the lame Guinea but was worried to do so as I had heard they die if isolated from their herd. In the future if this were to happen (a disabled or weak Guinea), how did you keep it separate and happy and...

Hurt guinea attacked and killed by other guineas. Why?

Thank you so much for this reply. I now better understand. Though it does break my heart. Little Hoppy was my favorite guinea. I'm sad that I wasn't outside at the time to protect him. If there is a place for animals in heaven, I hope Hoppy is now fully healed, happy, and knows he was...

Hurt guinea attacked and killed by other guineas. Why?

Thank you for sharing your experience. It does help to know this is something they can do. I am heartbroken but maybe my bird is now free from pain, flying happily wherever birds go when they die.

Hurt guinea attacked and killed by other guineas. Why?

I had one guinea that had a bum leg from birth. I couldn't find a vet that would see a guinea. He got around ok (hopping or flying) and didn't seem to be in any pain. But as the birds got older, he seemed smaller than the others. And because he could not keep up, he did not hunt with the...

How to introduce Keets to Adult Guineas and Chickens

I have 1 rooster, 7 laying hens, and only 2 adult guineas. (I had 9 originally, but when they free-range, or refuse to come into the coop at night, they have been picked off by predators.) I love guineas! So I ordered some keets that are roughly 4 weeks old. They live in a heated brooder...

    Sad Guinea? Sits alone

She calls, but very quietly. I need to be near to hear her. She appears healthy. At times, I’ve seen other guineas poke their head in the coop as if to ask, “Are you coming?” Sometimes she tags along but stays about 15 feet away. They do not let me carry. I have no idea on weight, but...

    Sad Guinea? Sits alone

Yes, she sometimes hung with the rooster. So maybe mourning? Though we have 3 guinea hens and four guinea cocks. So I would have thought one of them would want her! I’ve been forcing her out of the coop. She is eating but not going out very far to forage like the others. Any ideas? How...

    Are your guineas laying yet?

Mine are laying. I live in Texas.

    Sad Guinea? Sits alone

I suppose this is possible, though I haven’t seen any bad behavior. If I notice this, what can I do? I can’t imagine they would ostracize a female!

New to raising chickens and guinea fowl

My name is Yvonne and my family calls me Vonnie11. I have 7 hens, 1 rooster, and 7 guineas (3 female). I love watching them! They are all past the 1 year mark and seem to be enjoying the acreage we have for foraging. I love this site as I am learning so much from all of you. Thank you!

    Sad Guinea? Sits alone

I am concerned. We have 7 hens, 1 rooster, and 7 guineas. One female guinea has taken to staying in the coop alone with her back facing me when I enter. This has gone on for 3 days now. By afternoon, I force her out of the coop. She does not hang out with the others. The only difference in...
