    Yes they can, chickens will eat most anything, just don't give too much of any one thing at a time. They will soon let you know if they don't like it.

    I put the waste hay/wood shaving and poo from my goats, sheep and chickens straight onto my borders. the chicks are in there everyday, scratching around for bugs, they break it up, turn it over and it works really well. They also like to sit under the bushes there for shade in the afternoons.

    I clean mine once a week, I too have the green problem. I bought a toilet brush, which I keep just for the waterers, gets in there quite well to get off any green stuff. I also use bleach don't measure, but rinse well.
