I put the waste hay/wood shaving and poo from my goats, sheep and chickens straight onto my borders. the chicks are in there everyday, scratching around for bugs, they break it up, turn it over and it works really well. They also like to sit under the bushes there for shade in the afternoons.
I think you do need to be careful with the long bits.
Some months ago one of my younger chicks must have taken a piece from the nesting box. When I saw her she had a 6-7inch piece sticking out of her beak, the rest inside. Didn't seem to bother her much, but bothered me a lot. I went indoors...
I clean mine once a week, I too have the green problem. I bought a toilet brush, which I keep just for the waterers, gets in there quite well to get off any green stuff. I also use bleach don't measure, but rinse well.

I have 40 production reds. I use 3 one gallon waterers. One has a green base, one has a blue base (they are the same type) and one a slighly different type has a red base.
I check the waterers several times during the day...
