I didn't get to handle her, but this was the chicken yesterday on her 5th day of the recommended antibiotics.
Definitely less swollen. I noticed bubbles in both eyes. I have my mom my expired Rooster Booster electrolyte powder to give her after the antibiotics (not ideal being expired, but...
Agreed.
Will update again Christmas when I visit again. I told my mom the cavity is conveniently q-tip size, so I put a saline soaked one in it for the soak/compress after initial rinse. My mom has kept with cleaning and ointment the eye twice daily, or at least once if she missed to morning...
Before (1st photo) and after (2nd & 3rd) attempted cleaning. Didn't get as much out. The drainage smells absolutely FOUL. I can squeeze mucus out of the nostril of the affected side.
She'll start trimeth/sulfa tomorrow.
Just wanted to update on original chick: her eye was doing really well, but a predator (presumably a hawk) nabbed her the other morning.
Thankfully, my hawk issues usually occur in the early morning hours and are easily avoided by locking up any birds under 12 or so weeks until about 10 am...
Would it be a good idea to pack a warm saline soaked haze gauze into the opening to try to loosen the remaining exudate? Or will antibiotic ointment do that for us?
I'll be back at my parent's on Saturday, so we'll see about doing more then. I'm the meantime (unless otherwise stated) our plan was for my mom to pack the eye with antibiotic twice a day and keep her isolated to allow healing.
I couldn't get the crud out of that deep crevasse; tried a q-tip and tweezers. We decided to give her break. There was some clear thick drainage from the nostril on the same side as the affected eye after the 15 minute soak.
She still has her eyeball, though!
This one is my mom's bird. She's put bacitracin around the eye and tried to push out the crud. She's says "it's gross".
What are recommendations to clean it more thoroughly and heal?
@Eggcessive , I've looked into the vaccine before but I only hatch up to 8 chicks at a time, thanks to my devoted broodies. I'd be wasting a considerable amount of the vaccine since it cannot be stored.
Adding photos of Frightful and Cleopatra who have scars on their beaks presumably from Dry...
Thanks for the input!
I've had fowl pox a few times before, but not like this. I thought another older pullet had a beak injury, but I'm thinking it was pox now. Most the other obviously affected birds are cockerels and it's predominately on their combs and wattles.
I'm relieved only one has...
This sister (brother?) had a pox under her left eye that's already fallen off and healed. I thought this one would be my issue about a week ago.
Eyeball does seem a bit scarred which I hadn't noticed until tonight. I thought I'd include this one kinda as documentation. I wish I'd gotten a photo...
Her sister is having her own funky issue... She has a big pox on/in her beak. Could not see pox in mouth.
She also has it on one foot.
I'll call her Chick 2 for now.
