I have a Golden Comet about 4 1/2 years old, I noticed about a 4 days ago that she was hanging out in the nesting box during the day. Every time I checked she was in the nesting box that day. The next day she was out of the nest but couldn’t walk and the other hens were pecking her, so I...
I love these Golden Comets because they are so laid back and friendly. It really is upsetting that they have such a short life span. I know that she has laid soft shell eggs in the past so egg problems could have been her issue. Thanks for your input everyone!
Ok went out to feed chickens and found a dead hen in the roosting box. I assume she died during the night and fell off roost. How common would this be? There is no indication that she was attacked by a predator or by another hen (although she was at the bottom of the pecking order) I can’t...
I have put the saddle on the girls and brought the rooster back in with them. At first I put the saddles on the hens that had feather loss and the next day, the hen that only looked as tho her feathers were ruffled, I can see bare skin so put saddle on her. Everything seems to be going good...
Mary I have three hens that are pristine, no loss of feathers, then I have one hen who looks like feathers are ruffled but don’t really see any major loss, then I have these two who were introduced to the existing flock a year ago and are the bottom of the pecking order. When they started...
They are eating Layer Pellets and I mix in some Feather Fixer. I believe this afternoon I will put the rooster back in with the girls and put the saddles on these girls so that hopefully they can recover. I think this all started with a molt but these two never got feathers back and from the...
Four weeks ago I removed my rooster from my hens, he is caged separately, I removed him because my hens were loosing there feathers to what I thought was aggressive breeding. This was 4 weeks ago:
They are worse now with no rooster, I think I have a mean hen. These are the same girls today...
Younger hens are a year old. I will post pictures tomorrow (I am out of town tonight) I have aprons that I bought for my girls but have not used, maybe I should.
I have four hens, the oldest two are about 18 months old and are missing a few spots of feathers on their backs but my two youngest hens look horrible, their backs are almost bare. This started back in September, they were looking better and then this morning I went to the coop and a ton of...
I feed flock raiser and give oyster shell on the side (due to roo not sure he needs an overload in calcium) the feeder in the pic is scratch but my girls don’t like the cracked corn so fixing to trash what is left. I throw them a few mealworms but put them in the feeder today just to get...
