Thanks for the replies everyone! The roo in question is just so darn handsome that I don't want to give him up. I'll check out line breeding, more research is a good thing.
My brood hen hatched chicks a few weeks ago, and I'm contemplating keeping one of the roos to replace my grumpy roo. Would putting him into the flock with his mom be I'll advised? I could possibly hatch out more chicks in the future, so it's possible that chicks could come from the two related...
They haven't yet, these were all the steps we put in place so that when they do, they'll be able to get back in. Clarity in posts isn't always my strong point... sorry. But, I just went out to the coop to check on them, and the little buggers found a way out of the enclosure and are exploring...
Mine are all free range, and have about an acre to roam, so they're not in a run of any sort, so I guess that was my first concern. Mama has proven herself to be pretty defensive, even when she just goes outside to go to the bathroom, she's got her wings spread and lowered in a pretty agressive...
Our dog Amber hasn't met the chicks yet, they're still pretty fiercely protected by their mama, but she loves running through the flock outside. No harm or ill will, just seems to give her a giggle (if dogs can giggle). She does know to stay near me when the roo gets a little fiesty, and will...
I currently have a hen who hatched out 4 chicks. She's in an enclosure on the floor of the coop with them. More of a playpen made out of cardboard. It's high enough to keep the chicks in, but still let her jump out if she wants. The chicks are about 2 weeks old now and very active. Can I...
I had that happen in the beginning too. 2 of my hens were "co-parenting", as we called it. It seemed to work for a bit, but now, none of the eggs in that clutch have hatched, even though I candled them all to make sure that they were fertile. One of the hens gave up, but the other is still...
I've got 2 hens that are broody, one mama has hatched out 4 chicks, while the other is still sitting. There was a bit of nest juggling on their part in the beginning, but according to my best guess, the eggs should have hatched by now. I've candled the eggs, and they all look to have something...
Glad I found this thread, I was wondering the same thing. I found some 4' fencing at the local hardware store, would that be tall enough to keep them out? Dh can just build me a framed door to get in so climbing won't be an issue.
Glad to know I'm not alone. A friend of ours snuck in a hard boiled, blue dyed egg( we get blue eggs from one of the hens), but this one had a smiley face on it. Imagine my surprise!
The kids came up with some wacky names for our chicks for sure. The black and white Arucana is Penguin, the 2 lightest of the Brahmans are Butterscotch and Creme (short for creme brulee), another pair are Click and Clack since they go everwhere, then there are Scarlett and Melanie, Gwen, who...
