I had a chicken that was slow to grow. He was a rumpless rooster. I lost him to some thing in the yard at one time. He was the same size of the chicks that I had hatch 4 week after him yet he was 6 weeks older than them.
I always just put the babies on to the pine shaving and have never had any problems. I also put marbles in tot he water dish for the first dish for the first two days or so. I have lost babies to not having marbles int he water dish.
