I'm getting my birds from a university, they are supposed to be original lines. So if both birds are the same in production which personality do you like better, the BR or NHR? I kind of want to keep my birds purebred, so cross breeding is out of question. Thanks for all your help!
Hi guys! It's that time of the year for Spring chicks. I need to get more chicks since my flock got taken by coyotes. I've narrowed what I should get to the barred rocks or New Hampshire reds. I have a few questions about which one lays more eggs, which one yields more meat and which one is more...
Oh, sorry. I meant to say 30c. Those are the coldest or hottest it gets. The average temp is about -15c to -20c and the summer average is about 20c to 25c. So then my climate is fit for both? I wonder what the max temp is for chanteclers and min temp for the dorkings? Thanks for the help
Hi Anne,
What you have is a male bird. Since it has a large wattle and comb. I don't know about anyone else but whenever I get some chicks, the males always look like that and the hens always have smaller wattles and combs. Hope that helps!
Hi,
I have Been looking for a great heritage breed for meat and I have narrowed it down to the Dorking or the chantecler. Has anyone had expirences with any of these breeds, how did they dress out, did they have good broodiness? I would just like to know your expirences ? Thanks!
Hi, I'm glad there's a light Sussex thread here. I have 4 LS hens and they lay pretty well. I had 11 cockerels that I processed into decent fryers. The light Sussex are such a nice breed my Sussex have the Canadian bloodlines and are beautiful. Will post some pictures soon.
Hi,
I have also been looking to get an incubator this christmas and after looking around I found a great site that is fairly affordable, if you go on incubator warehouse they have a giant supply of incubators at a decent price. Here's a tip , use promo code facebook5 for five bucks off...
Hi faraday, those pullets look amazing they are so cute. My hens are probably going to turn out with a bit more white because I'm breeding with light not coronation Sussex. I have a few questions, are they more broody from what you have seen so far? What's their eggs size? Do they have more...
I'm not really sure if the hens have broody traits. I got them from these people who got theirs from an endangered breed rescue program. They have not gone broody yet once, but I hope they do because I don't really what to buy an incubator because of the price and because it seems like a hassle...
Hi I had recently just got a LO rooster to breed with my Ls hens. I was just wondering if breeding the two together would create a more broody light Sussex offspring? Thanks for all your help:)
I cull mine at 18 weeks old because I read somewhere that is the best time to. Mine were pretty bony because of bad time keeping( left them for a week without food my accident.) but I was wondering what breeds pack the most meat while still laying a lot of eggs.
Hi I have a flock of light Sussex and when I butchcered them the meat was pretty good. I'm just wondering what breeds have the best meat while still laying quite abit of eggs. Thank you in advance!
