Ameraucana

I have 1 month old Ameraucanas and they are very pretty, friendly, and playful. They can be very bold at sometimes... really only when they have to face my 3 month old white leghorns, red stars, and black stars!!!

Of my 3 adult roosters my Lavender Ameraucana is definitely the most chivalrous, LOL! He woos the ladies rather than just jumping them. He dances, sings and brings them gifts. He also doesn't take treats for himself. Instead, when I bring scraps out he runs over and sounds a call to let them know to come get it. As they come he will actually pick up bits in his mouth to show them and lay them at their feet. He also keeps showing them how to use the nipple waterer. And he snuggles them on the perch at night. Seriously, I could use 10 more just like him.

I have three, and i absolutely love them! Wouldn't want anything else.

Ameraucanas are my favorite breed and I happily own two of this interesting chicken.
They get along well with other chickens, but are extremely meek and will receive the worst of picking problems.
Their feathers are usually good looking and they are mostly bearded.
If bearded, they may have no wattles.
Usually pea-combed, their eggs can be blue or green.
Ameraucanas are not good with illnesses and will die out if the healthy are not separated from the sick.
The hens will care for chicks happily if they have been with a rooster and are willing to brood.

All in all, this breed is a must have for anyone's flock.

My first Ameraucana was very tame and would come into the house to visit. She didn't think she was a chicken and would not lay eggs with the other birds. Years later I now have 7 hens and 2 roosters. The two roosters are brothers but totally different in temperament and color. The splash roo is very friendly and will follow you around. I've had to keep him separate from the rest because his brother was picking on him. Recently I acquired some chicks and he's enamored with them and stays right by the cage I have them in. The brown roo is aggressive but has never attacked me till a couple days ago. I know he's just looking after his hens when he does that though. I just don't back down and let him know I won't put up with it. Let's say we respect each other. LOL

They don't lay many eggs though. Most of my last birds would lay just about every day but these surely don't. Out of 7 hens I only get about 4-5 eggs a day. That's not very efficient and that is why I bought some more chickens that aren't the same breed. They aren't a year old yet and one has gone broody. I am going to allow her to sit 5 eggs and I'm hoping some turn out white like she is. However, the other chickens have stopped laying! I am feeding all these chickens and not getting breakfast so I'm not too happy right now. I'm going to try a few things to encourage the others to lay again.

All in all, I do love the color of the eggs. I like how they stay in the yard when I let them out to run around. I like their personalities. I like it that my neighbors hate my roosters crowing. The more aggressive rooster crows constantly, all day long. The other one rarely crows at all.

My 3 are from My Pet chicken....they hatched from eggs. The 2 pullets are the friendliest girls, love to perch on me when I'm in the yard. My cockerel is gorgeous and I'm hoping he turns into a nice rooster.

I have 1 ameraucana chick that's a hen and I absolutely love her! She's really pretty! She the fastest of the ones that I use to have (since the other 3 got murdered by a raccoon ) She really likes eating worms and my whole flock loves her!

We have two Ameraucana's and one that died. The first two very good layers but would not let anyone near them, she was bit by a widow and died, the next one we got was very pretty, silver laced but could not handle being in the coop with the other laying hens. at laying age she could not handle getting picked on and tried killing herself multiple times. Shes been living with the silkies, and even hand raised she hates people. very good layers and gorgeous but not calm, and get spooked very easily.

My absolute favorite bird! They are smart and sweet. Not aggressive at all. The sweetest rooster I've ever had. Much nicer than my last BO cockerel. They lay frequently but they just have prettier eggs! I highly recommend them for anyone!

Docile good for kids. The loose feathering and beards can get messy.

I have had 3 Ameracanas and they have all been rather skittish - however, my most recent one is not nice at all!
As a matter of fact, her main goal is to walk around and PECK any other hen that she sees. All 9 of the other girls
avoid her at all costs! Yikes. I'm trying to decide how to handle her meanness - I have watched her pluck a feather
out of another hen and then EAT it! :/ I've raised my hens from one day old chicks and handled them all every day so
there is no reason for her to not be used to people, etc. My Buff Orpingtons will walk over and wait for me to pick them up.
But, I do love to see those blue eggs in the basket!

I have a very large flock of ameraucanas they are very smart and docile and attentive.

I have raised over 100 of these birds, all colors, chicks grow quickly, good body for small roaster up to five months, once they mature and start laying seem to trim down , to breeding weight. Consistent layers, mine laid through molt and the winter months. Good broodys, mothers, dedicated, good social interaction. Interesting crosses, carrying the pea comb dominantly with all crosses, lakenvelder, buff orpington, barred rock, and crosses very hardy. Excellent in either free range or confined coop, very friendly, love attention and lap! Great foragers and feed conversion. Just a wonderful all around breed. I imagine if you don't have much contact with them they could be wild, but that has not been my experience!
I just had to add, the chicks are high in the cute factor! Their faces appear to smile, like they have an amusing secret, and they are plotting hysterical mischief (they are you know!), and quite satisfied with themselves! If you want a bird that will be a pet, a producer, producing lovely blue green eggs, or a colorful personality, to adorn your yard or barnyard, you couldnt go wrong with these beautiful and versatile birds!

I breed Blue Ameraucana bantams and also have other color varieties of them. They are one of my most favorite chicken breeds ever! They are calm, always around the middle of the pecking order. Also they are beautiful, and they have many different plumages. Mine are very friendly, always running up to me to say hello. Their eggs are big, about the size of my Rhode Island Reds' eggs. I get sky-blue eggs from my girls, and they are great layers to, giving me an egg almost every day. I have a Blue Ameraucana rooster, Merlin, and he is a sweetie. My Ameraucanas are both heat and cold hardy. They are just an all around great bird!!

Ameraucanas are georgeous birds. My favorite variety are the blue, but i love them all (white, black, buff, wheaten, blue wheaten, brown red, silver and the un accepted colors too lavender and splash). The blue eggs they lay are so pretty too. Personally Ameraucanas are my favorite breed. The first chicken I ever had was an ameruacana. I love to show them. All of mine are docile, really cold hardy, friendly, and I have realized other people have said that they pick on their other brds, but I have never had that problem with them. Also it seems like a lot of people say theirs are skitish, maybe I have been lucky but all mine are as friendly as could be. And speaking of cold hardy, I live in Indiana and the weather is so umperdictable, it get really cold and reallly warm. They do really well during the winter (I have never had one get to cold and die or anything like that). And as long as they had a shady place to relax they were good when it got really warm at. I think Ameraucanas are awesome birds and would make an awesome addition to your flock.

I have an ameraucana rooster and two ameraucana bantam hens. All three are gorgeous birds and show very nicely all three are fine being held and do well in the show ring. My only problem with the breed is my rooster is a little mean and can be a fighter around his hens. The hens are runners and try not to let you get a hold of them. When you do they behave but it's a pain to get them. Other then that I love the breed.

Beardsley, my ameraucana, is a very pretty bird. But, she is almost impossible to catch because she just runs from you. She nearly flew over the fence one day while we were trying to catch her too. She has pecked us when we get close and she is just sort of a pain due to her lack of docility. If I decide to get another one of these, I would hope they would be more friendly and not freak out every time you get within a five foot vicinity.

Love this breed. Favorite for kids to hold because they are on the small side. Their personality's are amazing, I love watching them free range!!!

Our Americaunas live here in Alaska and seem to be cold hardy. Dependable layers, pretty eggs. The birds are friendly and rather outgoing, but can be shy. I have this one who is best friends with a speckled sussex. I see them alone together in the woods often. We have about 50 layers in all, so I think it's funny they run off together. Both hens. I love the color variations. I got all of mine from cackle. 15 in all, very healthy, great price.

Pretty friendly birds with pretty eggs.
They get along well with other chickens and people.
Good starter breed for anyone
