Ameraucana

I love these birds there colored eggs are so neat and they love the be pet.

My two girls took 9 months to start laying, but being able to deliver eggs, with the occasional blue/green one mixed in, has made my egg people happy - well and me too. They don't seem to be anywhere in the pecking order, they are just there. Not an affectionate breed, but one follows me everywhere and seems to be my #1 fan - I can not hold her, she is just content to hang out. They winter very well, have no fear of snow, ice or rain.

My americauna hen is very nice. She is in no way timid or mean to people. To the other chickens, she is usually pretty nice, but I have witnessed her pecking at the lowest rank ones. She will go outside for extended periods of time even in the coldest weather, which is nice, because we keep the water outside. I would recommend americaunas highly to any flock, especially for beginners.

The gentle nature of the Ameraucana is evident with my lead hen. She makes her presence known by raising her head followed by a possible peck or two and nothing more. When I sit, she immediately hops into my lap to be stroked. She is lovely to look at with her full muffs and beard, slate colored legs, and golden feathers.

My amaraucanas are pretty and handsome birds. My roo is protective and nice. I haven't got an egg out of my hens but it is winter, anyways then are nice and pretty birds.

My Ameraucana is one of my favorite hens! Her eggs are absolutely gorgeous, and she lays a decent amount. However, she doesn't seem to care much about her eggs, so sometimes she'll just lay them as she's walking on the ground. That isn't so great. However, she's great in cold, we've had a couple nights in a row around -10. While she's friendly, she sometimes get spooked. I dropped their bag of feed by accident, she got really frightened, and wouldn't let me come near her for a few days. Otherwise though, she will cuddle and let you hold her cause she's just that friendly. I would definitely reccomend Ameraucana(s) as an addition to your flock!

These birds are very docile when you handle them. They're so furry and everybody in the house loves our Ameraucanas. The eggs are gorgeous, too. However, they don't lay that many eggs and they aren't very well-behaved at times.

We have had about 10 Ameracauna hens, all different colors of course, from Orscheln's feed shop. The first thing that struck me about the female chicks is that they acted quite roo-ish - adventurous, good flyers, great foragers. Each one has a strong personality with the whole range of docile to crazy. I had Princess, blue grey feathered who was extremely sweet, if I said her name she would stick her head high over the others to look at me. She didn't run and let me pet her. Most don't like to be pet, they enjoy looking regal and strong in front of the other birds, they lead the charge out to free range. They cover a lot of area in free range and they fly very high. I have one hen who doesn't lay at all, the prettiest one! All the rest are strong daily layers.

I had one of these chickens. It was very friendly, pretty, and actually seemed smart, but also very sickly. She died today at only eight months old after being sick and out of it for a while. I like this breed, but be extra careful, especially if it starts gaping its mouth and getting really laggy.

Unfortunately, my ameraucana hen Miriam was taken by a raccoon a few days ago (thanks for protecting her, dear rooster ), but I figured I'd write a review on this amazing breed.

Miriam was the most hardcore hen I've ever owned. Hardcore being the key word. At first, she was very shy and at the bottom of the pecking order, but she also had some health problems when I first got her. So the health problems made her act differently and more laid back. Once she got better, she became much more spunky, and really just a hilarious chicken. She really marched the beat of her own drum, and just recently became the top of the pecking order, above our rooster.

She laid a gorgeous blue egg for me every day in summer, and if there was one thing that she love with all her chicken heart, it was food. She'd walk out across the yard in waist-deep (for her) snow just to chase the birds away from the feeder and eat the seed that they dropped. I fed all my chickens, so it's not like she was malnourished and had to eat the bird seed for nutrition. She ate SO much, but don't let that deter you from the breed.

I recommend the breed to anyone and everyone looking for a hilarious, spunky breed.

My Ameraucanas are very sweet, both let me pick them up really easily. One was really wild as a "young'un", until she matured. She's settled down a lot since she started laying and she gives me big, beautiful blue/green eggs. The other is a real sweetheart and sits on my lap, tucking her little head into the crook of my arm she has flown up onto my shoulder and perched there while I do my chicken chores. They are quiet and make soft cooing sounds. They fit into my flock well, neither bullies nor victims. When I say "can have odd personalities" I mean that some are crazy bullies and some are major pushovers, each one is different. All of them are unique, and that's one thing I love about them. They're my favorite breed and I hope you'll give them a try!

My Ameraucana is the favorite among friends and family with her reddish brown coloring and more stream-lined game-style body build. She is the most inquisitive of the flock and seeks independent investigations instead of following the apha hen. My Ameraucana could fly well and I had to learn to trim her wings to keep her within the seven foot fence. A very high roost in the night pen also provided the altitude she seemed to need at night. The eggs are a conversation piece. Although the last to become accustomed to being held, she now loves it and tucks herself very tightly together, cuddles her head in and goes to sleep.

I had several batches of Ameraucanas. Wanted to love them because of the beautiful eggs, but just couldn't. Had a few adults escape from a very secure pen and go off to live in the woods. We had a small flock and spent time with them every day, but could never tame them. Raised chicks and purchased adult birds with the same results.

They are beautiful birds. I love breeding them and seeing them in my yard. I would recommend them! The roosters are not overly loud, and I havent found them aggressive. They are very fun to show. They are very flighty from a young age. I have raised them from chicks to adults and they are still skittish and wary. I have found the hens to be grumpy, and often will pick on the other hens. They are more flighty then aggressive towards humans though. Although I don't view them as great cuddle-birds, they are wonderful to breed and are so dreamy to look at. I can't imagine myself not breeding them as they are gorgeous birds.

I get six eggs per week from my Ameraucanas. They're the best layers in my flock in both volume and size. The eggs range in color from a very pale green to a dark turquoise green. They're beautiful birds, nicely colored with interesting wing patterns. One of mine even has tufts on the sides of her cheeks. Mine are bantam sized - not sure if they come bigger - and they're in a run with two Barred Rocks and two Black Australorps, which are big birds. The result is that they're the lowest of the pecking order. I went on vacation recently, and came back to find one had an open wound, down to the meat on her back, near her tail. The other one had some feather loss in the same spot and I saw her sitting in the dirt getting pecked. I think I've solved that dilemma with an extra feeder, Peck-No-More on the trouble spots, and lots of TLC.

Despite the extra trouble, my Ameraucanas are my favorite birds. My next flock will be all Ameraucana, and perhaps they'll all get along better being the same breed and size. They're egg production simply can't be beat, and there's not a more beautiful chicken in my opinion. I'm a beginner, and they've been an easy and rewarding breed for me.

dont know how to fix this one bird if i could i may like it but for now i dont any advice would be welcome

I've had two Ameraucanas and still have one. They are the friendliest out of all my girls and they lay the best green eggs. Great personalities, very personal and loving. I would recommend these birds to everyone of you want a loving pet.

As chicks they were very hardy, quick to pick up on new things, they lead the flock. Mine are 2 1/2 years old and haven't been broody at all. Huge pale blue eggs that don't fit in the cartons- mine average an egg every other day. Good at foraging.
Sweet roosters. Of the 7 roosters all of them were friendly, protective of the girls.. crow a *lot* (the hens are quiet- but will chat to you.) Diligent about watching for predators (they learned from the paranoid guineas.)
Agile- easily able to clear our almost 6 foot tall fence to hang out on the back porch, hop on to my 6'4" husband's shoulder, invade the garden.
A few are rather timid and don't want to be handled- unless you have treats- in which case they will put up with anything and will follow us anywhere. One of our hens- Izzy- will jump on our shoulder or onto our forearm looking for attention. (She's an odd one though- very easily trained as she is food crazy and LOVES people. Best. chicken. ever. She knows her name- knows "step down"- and will let me use her to clean Japanese beetles off of the pole beans... which worked much better when she was a few ounces vs now at several pounds... walks the grape vines to clean off J. beetles.. will help herself to your drink if she can get at it- especially coffee. Sits on my husband's knee while he does the Sudoku puzzle in the paper. Blessed to have her... would take a million more just like her. Our roo is just as loveable, clever, & trusting.)

A **lot** of personality.

I have a few of these in my flock. Raised them since chicks and now in their egg laying stages as well as two in there crowing persona "voice augmentators" stage got to say that it a greatness pleasure to have them.
