Easter Eggers

I have an EE roo, both his parents are pure Ameraucana, but diff colors, so for some reason that makes him an EE since he isnt quite a standard color. He is amazing though, very nice, protects his ladies and the yard, I am working him into being used to being held and stuff, he is making very good progress since I try to hold him everyday for atleast a little bit. he doesnt go after the dog, me, my wife, or my 2 daughters, but god help you if you are another bird/squirrel/rabbit/cat, etc. . . . My EE roo just recently started mating with my hens, so soon I will be able to hatch out some more EE's, They will be EE roo mixed with red stars
Oh btw, when I got him, he was supposed to be a she lol I was not wanting a rooster AT ALL yet, but now after getting to know him and see how is he acts I cant get rid of him.

We own 2 easter eggers (EE). They are lovely birds. That is really what we love about them most. The muffs look so cute and makes those hens fun to pet. One is very friendly and likes to cuddle and the other is just the opposite. The skittish one does calm down if you can catch her and enjoys petting. Our EE hens are moderate layers and ours have not produced any eggs since the winter moult. They will pick up again eventually when it gets warmer but they're not our best layers. If you want consistency in laying this is not the breed for you. One produces large eggs and the other medium. Both lay mint green eggs for us which look great along side our other eggs in the carton. One is a much better layer then the other also. Like I said EE, being a mutt breed, have real consistency issues beyond the normal variation you'd expect in a variety of chickens. We have more than enough eggs for my small family with a mixed flock, so the modest egg production is not a big deal. When they are laying their green eggs get a big reaction with our friends. We would definitely get more.

My two EEs are super-friendly. They really don't care if you pick them up. They are pretty good egg-layers--mine stopped laying early-November but started back up again around the holidays, each lays 4-5 eggs/wk. Great bird.

My EEs are also incredibly curious/maybe even a little naughty. My coop is built into my shed, so it has a door connecting the shed to the coop so that I can go into the coop and whatnot. So one of my EEs hops out of the coop when I open the door to check their feed level and starts running around in the shed. (I'm chasing her around and trying to get her back into the coop.) Eventually I can get her close to the coop door, so I open it and my other EE tries to hop out. I have to shut the door in her face so that she also won't get out and then that scares the first EE who's still running around in the shed . . .


Eventually I got her back in the coop, but it took a while. So if you're not okay with chasing around chickens trying to get them back in their coop, then don't get EEs. Otherwise, EEs are awesome.

I love the looks of Easter Eggers, their puffy cheeks, beards, and the variety of colors/patterns they come in. I've even seen a fairly wide range of body styles/shapes, I suppose depending on what was mixed to create them. And of course I love the variety of eggs you get from them. Mine have always been friendly, some of them lap chickens and some not. I've only had four EEs, but they were all inquisitive. They fly better than any other LF chickens I've owned, which could be a plus if you free range, a con if you contain them in an uncovered run. If you want variety of looks in a single "breed", the EE is the way to go, since they could be gold, black, grey, white, etc. I would consider them average egg layers at 4-5 eggs per week.

We love our little reddish-brown easter egger. She is a reliable layer, and gets along well with all of our other chickens. The only one downfall for her is that she has never been quite as friendly as some of our breeds.

I really enjoy having them.

We have had our Easter eggers since August. We bought 1 pullet and got 2 roos free from a local woman who had too many roos. The pullet matured and laid us an olive drab egg every day until the first snow, now she lays every other day with the occasional daily egg. She is a lovely girl, inquisitive and has a crazy "hairdoo" of her neck feathers. The first roo was a gorgeous blue, he looked very much like a pure Ameraucana but he was not nice at all. He would come at us through the run and jump at us when free-ranging. The second roo, Charlie Sheen, was the alpha until recently, when he was overthrown by our red sexlink. Even though he isn't alpha anymore, he too comes at us through the run and comes at us when free-ranging.

Very happy with my EE's. Mine lay pinkish eggs and not the blue though.

Cinderella was my first chicken and I was eggcited to see her huge green eggs!

The one pullet I had was always broody, so that was good.(deceased)
One of the roos was always docile(deceased)... but the other is mean most of the time...
He picks on roos twice his size, and bites me....
I hope he dosn't speak for the whole breed.

we bought some blue hatching eggs and were told they were ameraucana. they were all mixed colored non standard but had slate legs and not green. some of the roosters were downright crazy but a few were tame. would not have them again.

Not for someone who needs an egg a day, but if you're looking for beautiful birds and beautiful eggs these are a good bet. They also have great, outgoing personalities. I'm a fan!

So far my experience with EEs has been mediocre. I love my 3 girls and they are sweet, but their egg-laying habits have been rather poor. The 2 I got in April started laying and then quit, and then molted, and now have finished molting and still aren't laying. The one I got in August has not started yet. I love the looks, the colors, etc., and when I got eggs I loved them too. To be completely honest, I'm not sure I'll be getting many more EEs in the future.

I have two ester eggers, and they are the cutest, friendliest things! I also love their beards!

I agree with everything in the "Breed Details" article below EXCEPT for the "seldom broody".
I have/had a mixed breed of 5 hens and although they all laid well ONLY the two that went broody were the two EE. They successfully hatched their cluthes a few days apart. Excellent mothers.

Rooster was the best darn rooster I've ever seen. He was huge, and a little too agressive.
After we put him down, we found out two days later why he was so protective.
Big Daddy was fighting off almost every known night time predator in our county!!
Two days after we culled him I lost a Wyandotte, the next day my beloved BR.

Great breed.

This is my favorite breed!

EEs are my favorite of the flock. I was intrigued with the blue eggs and promptly bonded with the breed. Currently working on a breeding program to incorporate feathered shanks with the typical characterisitics of the EEs (beards, blue/green eggs, shale shank, etc). Started this off with cochin X EE cross. Interesting results.
Anyone notice a striking docility in the wheaton birds?

I love Easter Eggers. I have several and they are awesome birds. They lay better than the Ameracaunas and Aracaunas, they're easy to find, and they're colorful. What's not to like?

Kids love collecting eggs already colored out of the nest! I do too. Mine lay pastel blue or green eggs. Curious and friendly, fun to have around.

We had one and she was great. Kind of looked like a hawk. She had some silver and gray mixed in with other colors. Eggs were a mint green. Wish she would have layer better and not hid so many eggs. We once found 26 green eggs hid in a tool shed. We loved her though and she was sweet.
