Golden Sex Link

Imported originally from the Netherlands, this strain is used in over 60 countries worldwide....
Pros: Nice, Good Egg Layers
Cons: Since they don't weigh much can fly high.
They are very good birds. The only problem is that some of my birds fly over the fence. They mess up the garden, flowers, and plants. Though very good egg layers, and nice!
Pros: excellent, reliable layers; very hardy hens (no health issues for us); tame, gentle; hilarious and amusing
Cons: prone to broodiness; VERY talkative
My first two hens were Golden Comets. They were killed a month ago by a predator and I'm still mourning them. They were being naughty and had flown the fence into the neighbor's yard, even though they have a whole acre to free-range here. That is where they were killed. So I would also say that in addition to being extremely talkative and loud, and prone to broodiness, they might be just a little too precocious. But that is also part of their charm. One of my girls was extremely attached to me and would ask to be picked up. She wouldn't go to the coop at night unless I escorted (or carried) her. They were the alpha and beta of my flock, but neither was mean, though one (the beta) was a little bit of a diva and sometimes bossy with the lower hens. Someone else wrote that they burst out of the coop each morning like it was on fire. That describes my Goldens perfectly. In fact, now that they're gone, we've noticed a huge downward shift in the energy in the flock overall. It's like the Goldens kept the other girls on their toes.

And they are incredible layers. Athena, the beta hen, went for 6 months between her first egg and her first day off. They laid on average 6-6.5 eggs a week from the day they started to the day they died. I calculated that we got about 1000 eggs between the two of them in an 18-month period. They were always the first to lay in the morning.

I miss them like crazy and would absolutely get more Goldens in the future. Highly recommend. Oh, and although they only lived to be 2 years old, we had no health issues whatsoever.
Pros: Large Eggs, Friendly, Low Cost, Efficient on Feed, Curious, Energetic, Loyal, No Health Problems, Not Overly Aggressive, Sweet
Cons: There is never enough of them, People get the wrong idea because of a few mean hens out there
My hens lay such large eggs that it sometimes is hard to shut to carton. They lay almost every single day. Only once in a great while one will skip. I have four hens who love to eat out of my hand Ace, Idis, Melisa, and Cydnee. Along with one rooster, Jack. There favorite treat are mealworms. I get them to jump and they will snatch it from my hand if I hold it right. My hens came from a woman-my mom to be exact who had a lot of other chickens. They where picked on and are pretty rough looking, but I am hoping that when the molt there feathers will grow back healthier. My rooster is not aggressive (anymore) twice he has tried to bow up on me but I stopped him right then with a couple of kicks across the yard. I have not had any more problems with him. I do have one cochin cross hen who is very nerves and gets pecked on when it comes to treats. When I pick them up they fuss very little and enjoy being petted. My hens eat very little for the amount of eggs and the size of eggs they lay. When I pick anything up they will run to me and start clucking begging for treats. I could pick up grass clippings and they would act like it was gold. When I let them out in the mornings they all rush out wings flopping like the coop is on fire. I have not had a single health problem with any of my hens. Every night when it gets reasonable dark my hens and the rooster will return to the coop to sleep. I love my hens so much!!!

Pros: Full of personality, lays eggs regularly, great "lap chickens"
Cons: None!
I've had this breed for two years now (being the only breed I can keep; a nearby egg farm sells them and I usually don't order stuff online) and they are awesome! I have two Red Stars/Red sex links/Isa Browns/Whatever else you wanna call 'em and they're very sweet chickens with distinct personalities, and have survived two predator attacks (hardy little chickens too, or just pure luck). Both are great layers of huge brown eggs and most of the birds I've kept don't object to being hugged. They don't "ask" to be held and petted, but I think that's just a matter of past experiences (again, they came from an egg farm). They're great with kids and they bond with each other well, being mild-mannered chickens.
Pros: Great egg layers, Friendly,
Cons: Like to wander far
Love my Golden's, egg a day every day! Happy, healthy, and low maintenance.
Pros: Great layers, friendly
Cons: None so far
I have had my 6 hens for over a year now and have no complaints. They have laid consistently and lay large brown eggs. They are very friendly and will follow me like little dogs. So far, they have not had any health issues.
Pros: Great Layers, and Gentle Birds
Cons: None
The hens are big pretty layers, of huge brown eggs. some of the hens we have, lay eggs so big, that we can't close the carton. Great personalities, and great with kids.

Pros: Good Layer
Cons: Aggressive, Stupid even for a chicken,
My gold sex link is aggravatingly stupid. Spends several minutes pacing and trying to locate the door to the run after all my other birds have gotten inside when I try to lock them up. She gets aggressive and puffs up when approached, bites toes and hogs food, takes food out of other chicken's mouths, and eats eggs. I will be looking forward to making her into a soup.

Pros: Great layers, large eggs, mostly friendly
Cons: always running away, easy catch for pray
These birds are GREAT layers they never stopped laying. I had two Goldens and they were very friendly and funny , they would come up to the house and beg for food on the front porch and even would fly next door and beg at the neighbors door. They were mostly friendly to the rest of the flock members. The cons are they were always running away I was always out looking everywhere for them, they would run off into the woods, cross the street, the neighbors house, they would go over and rip apart the neighbors and our vegetable garden , and they would fly up on top of our vehicles and scratch them up. Because they would run away so much they ended up getting eaten by a coyote.
Pros: Good temper and loves to be held
Cons: Nothing
I love my Golden Sex Link Rooster ! He is a wonderful rooster, we never have any trouble from him, he doesn't eat much, and he is very loving . I give the breed a gold star :) !
Pros: Easy going, layed back
Cons: None come to mind!
I have to dissagree about heath issues. I have 24 of 26 I started with, but the 2 I lost were to red tail hawks while out free ranging. I have had Golden Buffs just over a year now, and just love them. In the past I had Barred Rocks, and at a different time I had Buff Orpingtons. I loved both, but not as much as the Golden Buffs. (Golden sex link)....same thing.....

Pros: Laid over 100 eggs in a row
Cons: Evil! Pecked the other hens bare. Finally went to the pot.
Would not recommend.

Pros: Don't mind rather small spaces, good layers, nice, tolerant birds
Cons: Sleep on roof, poop on roof, poop a lot
I have 3 golden comets, and they are all sweet birds. Aside from the occasional toe-pecking, they like people. When they started laying, they laid with good regularity and nice eggs, though they didn't lay until 23 weeks, while some people claim they lay at 15. They will sleep on the roof, and do plenty of pooping there and in food/water, put don't mind much when you pick them up. Very tolerant of being handled. I have a pretty small run, but they don't mind, and don't try to escape. But, if you are prone to worrying (like me) Golden Comets are probably not the best, because they will often act oddly, or seem to be sick when that is just their particular quirks. As a beginner, they were good, because they weren't overwhelming, and do pretty well without lots of experience or fancy equipment.
Pros: lots of eggs,
Cons: they don't look cool
Great for an egg business. They are one of the best brown egg layers. For some reason people pay more for brown eggs.
Pros: vigorous
Cons: prone to feather picking, unpleasent
I bought chicks from Ideal hatchery in October and they are now 6 weeks old. I had 13 goldens, 2 black sexlinks, and 10 americaunas. The goldens are aggressive and seem determined to eat the americaunas. The americaunas are about one-third larger and yet the goldens methodically strip the back feathers from them, and if they draw blood watch out. Even with plenty of feed and reduced light they seem to have a strong drive to get that extra protein and it is hard to feel much affection for a little bit of fluff that is trying to eat another bit of fluff. I've tried separating out the most aggressive ones but with winter upon us I am short on warm places to keep them. I sold 6 of the Americauns and 4 of the goldens to a friend and she had to separate them too--even when outnumbered the goldens were aggressive. So the take home message is don't mix with other breeds, be ready with Bluecoat, and bear in mind these may be great layers but specialized breeding means they may not have the normal chicken personality we small time owners like. (They remind me a little of the Cornish cross, or Blobbies as we call them, big piggy dullards that are such gluttons I have little remorse when it's time for them to fulfill their destiny. Like the goldens, some of the normal chicken behavior is gone.)

Follow-up: Here we are, well into summer and my sexlinks are wonderful layers. I'm impressed! They get along well with each other and seem to behave pretty much like other hens. They don't wander much and seldom leave the immediate vicinity of the barnyard--I do miss my old Americana hen that learned to come all the way to the house to get treats and steal dog food. I suspect their caution means they are not very good foragers but on the other hand, my flower beds and garden are safe, and it was her tendency to explore that led to the Americana's untimely demise. Overall, I still hold with my advice to not mix these with other breeds, but they are attractive birds that lay well and seem quite healthy.
Pros: Pretty, hardy, lay tons of extra-large eggs, calm, friendly
Cons: None
When I started keeping chickens, I thought that I'd only keep heritage birds. Then I was given some Meyer Golden Comets, and fell in love with them. They are so pretty, and each looks a bit different from the others, which I like. They are the calmest birds that I have, and tolerate handling even though I do not tame my chickens. They do just fine with no heat through an Ohio winter, and just keep on laying. Now over half the flock are sex links, so I have 40+ of them at any given time. We've had several hundred over the past few years.

We have not experienced any of the negative health problems that others have had with this hybrid. Never had an eggbound hen, no prolapse, nothing. They just keep on laying eggs no matter the weather. We do sell our sex links when they pass 24 months old, so I do not know how they fare as older hens. We have not had any negative feedback from the people who buy our older hens, however.

Anytime anyone asks me what kind of hen they should get that will be great for a family and will lay lots of eggs, I recommend any of the commercial sex-linked hybrids.
Pros: Friendly, Good Layers
Cons: none that I know of
We owned two for a brief period for a friend. We see the chickens we raised for her often. One has passed but the other is still super friendly and is a good layer.
Pros: tthese are very nice birds, love the color, lay lots of eggs, not broody [even though i like a broody hen in my flock]
three words
love these birds
Pros: they lay lots of eggs and don't get broody much for those who just want layers and not hatcheries....
Cons: get egg bound easy but are great birds!
This was our best chicken buy ever i never regret getting the beautiful 7 hens that we got... although i would never buy chickens from TSC we bought 6 there and it was a mess! well that is another story but I am glad we got these gals!
