Pros: Everything a beginner needs to know!
Cons: Very little on showing chickens
This book tells you everything you need to know about starting your flock! Tells you how to raise chicks and hatch them on your own, to even keeping a crowing cockerel quite! Gives you hints on a good coop and on winterizing your flock. A must have.

Pros: Organized, Good Pics
Cons: Basic
This is a pretty good book with great pictures, but it is pretty much for beginners.
Pros: Easy to read, excellent breed index, lots of basic information
Cons: Gives basic info, but not too much detail, missing some major points
This is a great book to start with if you're interested in chickens. It gives you the broad idea and information on raising chickens as well as a great breed index (a lot of British breeds though). If you read this book and think you want chickens, take the topics given to you, and research them further, as well as other topics the book is missing (such as predators). It provides easy-to-read, and informative general information, but do not let this be the only book you read. As a whole, it is worth buying.
Pros: pretty photos, broad scope (from history to feed to recipes to housing to showing)
Cons: the subtitle, but still a lovely book!
i received this as a birthday gift when my husband and i were contemplating chicken keeping. a good portion of the book is your standard chicken breed dictionary. the rest is filled with bite sized information... in other words, it doesn't get too deep. i totally agree with TamTurkey's review, if you are looking for a book & you've already decided that you are going to keep chickens (and you are only buying one book), you probably ought to get a different (or another)book. you will want something that gets more into the nitty gritty! this is much more a picture book, but a very thoughtful one, concerned with most of the basics.
if it were the only book you read, you may be surprised suddenly when it's not all sunny side up (this is NOT like several other chicken keeping books i own; complete with graphic infestations, "crime scenes", natural disasters, etc!) for example, there is no "predator" in the index of this book!
i give it 3 stars, in part because i truly think the subtitle is misleading ("getting the best from your chickens"... it might be better called, getting to know some of the best about chickens)

Pros: awesome breed profiling!
Cons: more theoretical then practical
This is a nice book! The breed profiles are wonderful! It is (as others have said) British oriented and more about enjoying chickens than raising them!
Pros: informational
Cons: Non Specific
This is more of an explaination of Chickens and less of a "How to" if you are trying to decided if raising chicken is for you it's a good one to read. If you've decided already you might want another book.
