Leghorn

"Legs" comes running across the yard at full speed when I call to my hens. She never runs away and always squats for me to give her some rubs. She is an awesome forager and light on feed. She lays me a big white egg 5-6 days out of the week. I love her big mohawk and she striking against the green grass. I got her as a 5 month old thinking she would be just for eggs but she has turned into one of my favorite hens!

These lay white medium eggs every day! I get three a day from my three brown leghorn hens. although they are skittish birds they can be pretty hilarious!

My first flock was mostly Leghorns that I got from a family farm in Hudson, Colorado. They are an inexpensive breed which are great for beginners! Hens laid large white eggs daily. They foraged well while free ranging.

I have a brown leghorn named Goose. I named her Goose because she makes this sound that reminds me of a goose honking only quieter. She's a great layer, follows me all about the yard and gets the other chickens to follow me too. When I got her she was about a month older than the other chicks and mothered them. She is the head hen and is quick to remind the other hens with a sharp peck. I free range my birds and she is a great forager. The rest of the chickens follow her wherever she goes including the roosters. She eats out of my hand and comes when called. When I pull in the drive-way after work she comes running up to the car to greet me and follows me all the way to the back door. It's so cute (of course she's hoping for treats the little pig but it always brings a smile to my face). I can't imagine a better bird than her. I have no complaints with her. She stays more alert than some of my other hens and has great survival instinct (important since I free range) but is not flighty. I highly recommend leghorns. I also had a white leghorn named Gertrude and she was very personable too. This breed is a must have!

Our white leghorn, Snowball, is an egg laying machine. She doesn't sing a loud egg song and lays white eggs daily that are a little small, but she's been laying for only a few months. She tolerates us, probably because of the way we raised her, but I just learned that the way to a hen's heart is through its stomach. However, she is a little too clever for her own good, and very fast, but it's useful when the neighbor's dog gets in. Only just before she laid her first egg did she start doing a crouch when we got close, so we could finally pick her up. She is at the top of the pecking order, but we just have her and 2 RIR's. Once, I saw her chasing another chicken and being a little aggressive. Hmm. She is also a runt, and looks awful in the rain with mud on her feathers. But, overall, is a good bird, with a quiet egg song, daily egg production, and doesn't hate us. What more could an suburban chicken owner want?

I must have a great Leghorn, because the one I have is the friendliest, most 'pet' like, most social, calmest bird in my flock. I have a flock of four (white leghorn, red star, black jersey giant, buff orpington). The LH has a funny personality, she's the best layer of the four so far, she isn't flighty, she runs right to me as soon as she sees/hears me. I bought her right before she started laying, so it has nothing at all to do with how she was raised. She's just a good girl. She's the first to bed everynight, and the first to rise. I have never had a problem picking her up or holding her.

She lays 4-6 large/XL white eggs a week.

mine is only 3/12 months at this point. not laying yet, from what i hear they are the best layers overall which is what i wanted.

OK i had 7 of these birds very nice looking but very mean they pecked at everyone else and even killed a couple of my other birds we had to segregate them into another cage and at the end i sold them and the person who took them had the same problem, i have brown leghorns and those have not caused me any trouble whatsoever....

Got a white leghorn pullet from a chicken owner who needed to downsize her flock. She started laying for me at about 18-19 weeks, and now at 23-24 weeks, she lays 5-7 eggs a week. She is smaller than my other LF birds though, and flies very well...we clipped her wing, but she still figured out how to fly up on the fence where there is a slight dip, and get into my garden to eat my tomatoes! She doesn't do much harm though, so I'll let her continue.

When I ordered a mix of chicks, I got the exchequer leghorn to be pretty and to give me a lot of eggs, but I expected that I'd have to keep her in my smaller enclosed coop because of flightiness. But she is the sweetest, friendliest chicken of all my 22 ladies! She comes when I call, I pick her up with one hand, and she relaxes in my arms until I'm ready to stop cuddling. Of course, she doesn't mind if I give her a treat while she's up there. She does fly very VERY well, and gets over the 4-ft fence into my garden, but she doesn't tear it up like the larger hens would, so I don't mind. She just started laying, at 19 weeks old, and isn't much larger than a pigeon at the moment. Thank goodness the first eggs are pigeon-sized as well! Both eggs and pullet will get bigger.

I've got a white leghorn who started laying about a month ago (at 20 weeks) and even being a pullet, is laying 5-6 eggs a week. She is really friendly and not as flighty as I've heard.

i have leghorns and they are definatly not the friendly type. I recommend never putting these chickens in a pen with other chickens, because from my experience they do not get along well together. If you are looking for an affectionate breed these wouldent be your best bet, however they are great layers. Their eggs are medium/large and they are excellent.

Well i will admit , im new as far as my chickens are concerned to leghorns , but find them great birds! They are easy to care for , Will provide you with hours of laughter as they chase things , and ESPECIALLY the brown , has lovely silky feathers! the hens have a large single , flopped comb , and the males have a large single comb! they are a mediterrainian breed however so , are skitish flighty! and males can be aggressive! but generally a nice chicken breed , and have won me my forst show , coming 2nd place! they cope well under stress , so are ideal for showing but every bird is differant so why not buy 2 and find out for yourself! these are my 2 brown leghorn hens at a show!

I love my white leghorns! I have a small flock with several breeds, but the two leghorns are the sweetest. They are the only ones that will come proactively and sleep in my lap. They are so curious and also humorous to watch, yes they can be a little flighty but definitely worth every bit of it for all their personality!

These birds are some of the best egg layers! And, previous experience, they live quite a good long laying life...

They are perfect for where I live, and lay amazingly. They are beautiful too! My leghorn chicks that are currently in the brooder are very friendly, and love life. They're my favorite breed as chicks! If you don't have a leghorn... Get one!

I've got two which I got this year, they're 2-3 months old, and beautiful! I love their plain coloring, and they're suppost to be great egg layers, which I'm excited about!

I got a 3 weeks old leghorn (breeder quality) and when I got her she was flighty and notfriendly and LOUD. But as soon as I pu her in with the other biirds she just calmed down and will now hop on my shoulder and loves to be petted. I think any bird will be friendly if they are raised in a good envirenment. Shes not old enough for eggs yet but her parents layed around 280 eggs a year. Cant wait!
