Mottled Cochin (bantam)

Pros: Sweet, beautiful, great disposition
Cons: Prone to predators. Roosters are a bit aggressive.
Well I didn’t have my mottled Cochin for long, but I enjoyed the time I did have it. They are so beautiful and they have wonderful personalities! You could sit there and watch them for hours, because that’s how entertaining they are! Hens are sweet and gentle... and love attention. Roosters also enjoy the attention, but if they aren’t socialized young they can become a little aggressive when they’re older. Overall experience, I loved having one and would love to get another one in the future.

Did you have yours shipped to you? I was just wondering because I want to get pekin bantams someday and was wondering if it was expensive to get them shipped.
Pros: Beautiful, sweet, fluffy. Cold hardy.
Cons: Broody, mine has low pecking order
I adore my Mottled Cochin Hope. She is absolutely the sweetest bird. Happy to be held and petted even by children. Shockingly soft and fluffy and gorgeous. I would love more but she has gone broody and I cannot break her of it.
She is low in the pecking order because of her gentle nature and tends to hide out.
She did very well in the cold weather and didn't suffer any frostbite.

Pros: Very pretty, stick around, egg production (for a bantam), friendly, great for brooding, quiet, low food requirements
Cons: More vulnerable to predators, hard to break from broodiness if you don't want that
Love these little birds. I enjoy how they stick closer to home than standard breeds and mine produce tons of delicious little light brown eggs. Yes, they go broody - and how! It can take over a week to break them and a couple more to go back into egg production. I don't mind as they have low feed requirements (always out ranging, only sleeping in the coop) and it is nice to know you've got a broody if you need one. I always use one as I am not interested in hatching a ton of birds.
My rooster is sweet and kind to his gals and not aggressive towards people. He's also beautiful.

I've had two of these and agree they have bucket loads of personality but they can be completely infuriating. In fact this is the first time I have had to cull a hen early in its life because it was very aggressive with nesting box use and even though it was low in the pecking order it got excited when it was dominant over another hen and would chase the screeching victim further. The surviving hen has a personality I like but keeps order by hassling others regularly because it doesn't have the size to intimidate. The broodiness issue has been never ending. They go broody very regularly, can only be broken with a serious effort and then you wait three weeks for a small egg again. I would estimate egg production at between 60 and 100 for the year.... so even though I love watching them walk in the garden it's unlikely I would get them again.

Beautiful birds! My Cruella inadvertently lived up to her name recently (I named her for the color first!) by being an incessant bully to my two d'uccle. She was a favorite until the Karen disposition appeared 🙁
