Plymouth Rock

I have two and they are awesome. Calm and very pretty. Wonderful birds!
Edit: They have reached laying, and laying they are! One lays every day and the other does nearly every day. I would get more in a heartbeat! They are curious and friendly!

This is a very nice, but shy bird.

We have 2 Plymouth Rock hens. We allow our hens to roam around our yard all day. The Plymouth Rock hens love to follow us and also are quick to run after worms and bugs, which is cute. They make for great pets. They are always together so we call them checkers.

They lay an egg a day, brown egg. And when they look at you it's pretty funny, their facial expression/faces can always put you in a good mood.

My Barred Rock is only 7 weeks old, but she is the most friendly out of the 4. She cocks her head side to side when I talk to her, and jumps up on my arm wanting to be pet. She has a great personality, I just love her!
My other 3 girls are, RIR, Buff Orpington and a Ameraucana. I would have to say I don't much about chickens as this is my first time raising them, but if you are looking to have a friendly hen, go for the Barred Rock. I almost wish I had 2 of them, but hopeful that the others will become a little more friendly as time goes on.

I had two Plymouth Rocks and I named them Sesai and Nippers. We got them when they were chicks in 2010 and one evening I went to go get them to bed and I had come to find that Sesai had passed away. 9/9/11. That night I just couldn't sleep and couldn't stop thinking about my poor little Sesai and what I would do without her. But now I can only think of how sweet and beautiful she was. Now I only have Nippers. Along with 4 Austrolorps, 2 Production Reds, and 3 Amerucaunas.

These hens are so amazing I absolutely love them! So far they are my favorite hen out there! GOTTA love 'em!

After having owned five different chicken breeds (1 individual of each), I have to say that my favorite so far has been my Barred Rock. She is sweet, docile, will fall asleep in my arms, and she is still laying eggs at about 4 years old. A good bird.

i love my hen, her name is Fry.. "FRYED" =] and she is my oldest.

Our 2 Barred Rocks are by the most aggressive and mean towards other chickens in our flock of 8. They have been since the day we brought them home. 1 drew blood on 2 other chicks the first week we had her. Now they continue to peck and be aggressive towards the majority of our flock.

They peck and peck hard, they have sharp beaks, and the Squawk of protest from the chickens are always loudest when its one of our Barreds doing the pecking. Really quite frustrating.

On the plus side, they are very easily handled by us, they let us pick them up in just about any way and settle quickly when held. They are funny birds, quite smart and fast. They are usually the first to get a bug, or worm.

Hope as they mature the pecking slows down a bit.

It's almost funny when I go out in the yard and the chickens come tearing across the yard straight for me! I always have a treat for them. They squat down and love to be held. They love cantaloupe seeds and leftover corn.

My barred rock is probably a mix breed, which is fine. She was part of a young man's breed project. She is only 8 weeks. Will edit when I know more about her.

These beauties are my favorite from my experience of 5 breeds. These gals are definitely pets, cute, cuddly, loving, gentle, friendly, excellent egg layers. Withstand winters very well. They never cause any kind of problems with other hens. They get along with everyone. you would not want them with any aggressive birds, they are too gentle for that nonsense.

The two I have are the friendliest in the flock of mixed birds. If you want a chicken to love you...this is your breed.

My girl, Petrie, I bought along with 3 other hens and a duck back in March and she was by far the strangest. She was also the hardest to name because her personality has always been sort of blah. They are 7 weeks now and she is still the most skittish. She is also pretty.....no polite way to put it...dumb as a post. While the other hens and the duck know when it's time to go into the run at the end of the day, and where the door is, she will continue to run back and forth past the door looking through the fence and cheeping. Until I finally get fed up with her, catch her and throw her in She is a pretty bird, and good at seeing off predators (and by predators I mean the doves, quail and other backyard birds)
Now that she has grown a bit, she is the bottom chicken of the pecking order and still sort of a mindless git, but she is sooo cute and fat and fun to watch bumbling about her business. She lays nice light brown eggs. Friendlier now too, especially since it's so easy to pick up a squatting hen.

Right from the first day she arrived little Coco Chanel was the sweetest chick. Her sisters, 2 Austrolorps and a Salmon Faverolles are nice too but Coco comes to me when I call her, and she's only a month old! She likes to sit on my lap and quietly chortle. It has been so much fun watching her grow into a real chicken! I can't wait for her to start laying!!

Barred rocks are one of my favorite birds! I've had mine for 6 years now. She is still is laying eggs even at her age!

The two types are separated by the dash. My White Rock is pretty, yet very flighty and agressive. I'd give the White Rock about a 2 star.

My Barred Rock is my favorite of all my pullets. She's sweet, calm, quiet, and beautiful! She has no cons. 5 stars for the BR.

This chicken is very friendly and a great egg layer. I would recommend this to many people.
