Plymouth Rock

I can't say anything negative about the Barred Rocks. We bought 8 straight run in March and ended up with 6 pullets & 2 cockerels. I love my boys! They're the sweetest babies. In my albums I have pics of my boys & my pullet Sweetness, they love to snuggle with me & stretch out their necks, put their chin/waddles on my arm & go to sleep. I'll fight ANYONE that tries to put my roos on the chopping block!

i have one barred rock and she is my friendliest chicken, always lets me hold her, never runs from me, and she learns very quickly! She lays tons of eggs, and is totally docile! at the end of the day, she hops up into my lap when i come outside! love them!

I have two barred rocks, and got them as chicks a bit over a year ago, and they have been nothing but fun. When I got them, one was much smaller than the other, but then they both grew and are about the same size now(and I am one of the few who can tell the two apart!). Mine's names are Ostrich(because she stretches her neck a lot) and You. They are very sweet and have been raised being handled a fair amount so they are VERY friendly. They lay almost every day, and their eggs are somewhere from cream-colored to brown. We have had no problems whatsoever with mites, fleas, or any infections of any sort. In fact, we handle ours so much they could be a little less friendly with people and we wouldn't mind, it's just we like picking them up and stroking their feathers because it is nice and soft and our only pets are chickens so we can't pet a cat or anything. Sometimes when we eat outside and they are out of their coop they come and beg and sometimes they jump on our armrest, and when we try to shoo them they jump on our arm, but we don't have problems with this- it's just a little humorous. I wouldn't worry about them jumping on chairs or dinner tables at all. Altogether they are very kind and caring and will wonder/bak to ask if everything is okay if you are crying. This is a great breed, is people friendly, and I would recommend it for anyone!

This is a great free range hen and does well with RIRs and Black Stars, but the hen I have is THE boss and chases other hens away from EVERYTHING, especially the younger girls.

My two barred rocks are 17 weeks old - not laying yet but soon. VERY talkative, always mumbling. They're also the first to investigate everything. They do get a little peckish toward the younger pullets that are 6wks behind them. Never harmful - just keeping them in line I guess.

We really enjoy these hens and find they go broody easy.

last spring we got 2 plymouth rock chicks from Tractor supply! along with some other breeds, But we thought we were getting plymouth rock hens! turns out they were strait run... we got two roosters!
everyone knows you cant have two roosters, unless you have enough hens or you have cock fights!
So, one has to go! but we found someone with 100 chickens! and they only have 2 plymouth rock roosters! So, they are trading us a hen for our rooster! but he will have a good home with plenty of hens!

Had a barred rock for a little over a month before a predator got her - she was a great layer and we miss her!

I got my Plymoth Rocks around march and they grow fast. My soon to be rooster is one of the largest of my new batch of chicks. He loves to be around me and peck at my jeans, but isn't a fan of being held. My hen sufferred an attack from one of my older hens and was bloody all around her tail area, with a vain exposed, but we confined her and healed her and now she is just as strong as ever!

I have one barred rock named Ramona and she's the best. She's very protective of the other hen that I have and FEARLESS! lol she's very human friendly too!

Sophie is a gorgeous and productive hen, BUT she is trying to kill Gertrude, my favorite Americauna. It's amazing because Giselle is also an Americauna and is the top of the order, she protects Gertie on occasion from Sophie's brutal attacks.
Sophie bothers no one else but I have separated her from the flock as she has pulled out all of the neck feathers from Gertie and seems to be going in for the kill lately. Gertie tries to stay away from Sophie, but at night she is getting whooped on the roosting pole!
PBRs are not always the gentlest.

I have a barred rock that is 5 or 6 years old named Fancy. She lays the prettiest egg of all my birds even in her old age. She is a great bird but is a little stubborn and skittish.

I already liked them, but when we visited the local community gardens my mom got to see some. My mom dislikes my love of chickens very much. When she saw these I found at least one chicken that could get through to her! Hooray for Barred Plymouth Rocks!!!!!!

mine are overall bossy and dont take to people much. they would rather do their own thing and prefer free ranging.

I am raising a flock of Partridge rocks. I free range and breed them. They work great for me due to their size and pattern as well as their friendlness. I have not had a mean to humans type of rooster. All my roosters have been good towards people. Hens lay real well, egg size medlarge to jumbo. I have had some lay 2times a day in the spring here. Food type is important with these as they do much better of 18 or higher protien due to their size.

Males and females are two different colors and patterns. Females are brown with black penciling and males a red and black soild no pattern. This is one of the reason this color pattern is not highly bred. The Whites and barreds are more common but due to breeding may lack some of the Partrdge qualities like broodness and foraging.

Overall this breed Plymouth Rock is a great backyard chicken breed to own. It has 7 colors variations and one of the best temperments of many breeds. It was made in th USA just for a backyard chicken and has never left it.

I liked my barred rocks, but it seemed like they molted a lot! They never kept their feathers for long. They were okay layers, but another thing i noticed was they got sick a lot too, and i live in a pretty dry area.

I have had Barred Rock hens twice in the past and loved them. They're friendly and calm and lay very well. Now, however, I have 15 6-wk old cockerels for meat and they're really aggressive, both with each other as well as with my female and male Dorkings and female Marans (all are 6 wks old). I feel like taking people's wagers, I've got so many cock fights going on! LOL One little guy even has an eye injury from their fights. I had planned on butchering them in August, but it looks as though I may butcher some of them sooner rather than later just to thin them out a little to give my calmer birds a break.
