Salmon Favorelle

My little Miss Sassypants is definitely not at the bottom of the pecking order! She will take on birds much larger than she is when they run around trying to decide who’s boss. She’s friendly, curious, and a talker. I highly recommend you add a few to your flock. They are very entertaining little birds. Don’t tell the others, but she’s one of my favorites!

I got 4 as chicks and made the mistake of putting them into the same brooder of some other breed chicks that were a few weeks older. Only 1 out of 4 survived, other 3 got stepped on and didn't make it. It was very sad.

I did noticed that unlike other breeds where the day chicks know where to go for food, the SF tend to seem lost. Eventually they figure it out, but kinda slow compared to other breeds.

She is super cute and is my favorite! SF and Ameraucanas are my favs with their fluffiness, beards and muffs!!!

I trained mine at an early age to sit on my shoulder, and at 3 months it will still chill out on my shoulder!

I only have one, so she may be an exception, but she is very noisy (sounds almost like a goose), and is skittish. When she was younger, she was the only one that would try to peck at me when I'd go into the coop (I managed to get her to stop that). I would not get another one the next time around.

Update - she only continued to get noisier and having an urban coop, I had to rehome her so she didn't continue to annoy the neighbors.

I have a pair and I love them, they are the sweetest ever and will let me walk right up to them, pick them up, and pet them. They are my favorite to watch of all my chickens, The rooster is beautiful and I love to watch them wobble across the yard chasing after bugs. I would recommend these to anyone wanting a pet flock.

I purchased five Salmon Favorelle hens two months ago. They are about five months old now. They are so cute and they follow me around the barn while I'm filling up waterers and feeders. I have a wide variety of chicken breeds, but these chickens take the prize for the most inquisitive, easy-going eye-candy in the yard. They have not started laying yet, but I'm hoping to have some eggs during the winter.

I love these birds. They are highly recommended for families.

Too soon to tell if I am going to like this breed. I have what is supposed to be an almost 2 week old chick but her development looks more to be 2 - 3 weeks. She is huge compared to my other chicks from the same group. I was wondering if this is normal for the breed? As a chick she loves to watch over the other chicks and lets them snuggle up to her. If this is a sign of things to come (broody etc.) she is already being a "Mama hen." Here is a picture of her as a "week old" - she is the large one in the back.

Our two Salmon Faverolles have been a bit of a disappointment. They both have been broody several times this spring and summer, and for long stretches of time. When we got them last year from Ideal Poultry we were excited to have a social and friendly pair. They are really not very social. As chicks only one of them was interested in us but as she matured she became as aloof as her sister. Their feet look kind of mangled and gnarly which is terribly unattractive for such a fancy looking bird. They do forage really well, and are not picky eaters. Both are low on the pecking order and are quite noisy when they lay an egg. They will sqwauk for hours before they settle into a nesting box, and then make a huge racket after they lay. Sometimes they get each other and several of our other chickens going, too.

If I had it to do over, I would choose another breed, simply because we live in a neighborhood where the houses are kind of close and I worry that they will get the neighbors upset with all the racket.

I have four salmon faverolles. I wanted golden sexlinks but ended up getting this breed by accident and I am happy it happened! They are so sweet. Skiddish at times. Two have gone broody and they went broody under a year old. One even hatched a batch of chicks at 9 months old for me. She was so broody, I had to make her get off the nest to eat and drink and dust bathe. But she did great for the hatch and took care of them well, they all ended up bring roosters (go figure) so I did not keep any of them. I would recommend this breed to anyone. They are great layers. It is spring now and each hen lays 4 to 5 eggs a week! That's great. I would get more, but I want to have different breeds and can only have 8 total. So I will always have this breed in my flock.

These are very winter hardy, friendly, good egg laying birds. My rooster is a little testy with me and he has gone after my daughter, has not hurt her, but scares her a bit. Overall fantastic birds, one of my favorites. They were also gorgeous juveniles!

Salmon Faverolles are my favorite chicken. I have four hens and a rooster. They are very tame and friendly, and they look so cute with their beards and muffs, feathered legs and five toes. The rooster takes good care of his flock of 4 Ameraucanas, 2 Wyandottes and 3 Cochins as well as the Salmon Faverolles, without being a bully. The hens lay pretty pink eggs even during winter. I love them!

I currently only have one Salmon Faverolle, (a pullet named Fritzle). I had another one as a chick, but sadly she died of phnemonia, and she was going to be so gorgeous!





In terms of a good quality Salmon Faverolles she has split wing, too much black for a girl, and her tail is a little underdeveloped (plus she just loves to step in everyone's poop!). But most Salmon Faverolles girls lose their black coloring, thicken up, their tails grown in, and they become cute fluffy, lovable, pet chickens.
Although she will never be a high standard show quality bird she has an awesome personality (like any well handled bird of this breed should). She's very gentle with me, and with the other birds. She is quite the loud mouth, and has a deeper duck like voice, but she's such a character! (She does have trouble seeing sometimes, which although a bit sad, is still cute when she can't find the treat right away)
A HUGE bonus is their fluffy beard and muffs, giving them the cutest, fluffiest face ever! The 5 feathered toes are also very intriguing, although maybe not to everyone.

Beginners, or anyone looking for a nice, cute chicken that their kid can handle should totally get at least one of these guys, even the boys are super sweet!

I love my favorelle. He is sweet, and always comes up to me. This breed is a very friendly and a pretty good egg layers. They are a dual purpose breed, leaning more towards the heavier side.


My rooster "Babe"

Hello. I have one salmon Favorelle, and I love her to death! She is my favorite chicken breed ever! I got her as a day old chick along with two others. She used to be the lowest one in the pecking order, from even my two year old hens, but now she's passed her siblings and is even starting to pick on the older ones even though she never hurts anyone.
She is so funny, she loves to come up to me (especially when I'm making loud sounds) and she loves to chase my dogs!!! She is also very cute and her breed makes good show birds and Mama hens. Mine has gone broody once, but she is only 6 months old so I'm going to wait until she's a bit older until I let her hatch eggs.

I highly recommend these for anyone that wants to have a fun, very curious, and very docile chicken! I will be getting another one along with 16 other chicks in late February/early March. I'm very excited!
