Serama

The Serama breed originated in Malaysia, apparently through the crossing of Japanese and Malaysian bantams.
Pros: Lovely, tame, valuable, handsome birds.
One of mine lays daily with large eggs compared to her body size.
Cons: Get very cold, snacks for hawks, can be delicate.
I really love them!

People say they are rubbish layers, and they aren't the VERY best, but some can be really good.
I love true bantams but these are especially endearing.

For those who want to keep them indoors, well they can't be toilet trained, but the roos aren't that loud and many, including mine, just sound like squeaky toys.

Most can be very happy in trios or even pairs.
Don't try to keep them indoors totally though, because they do love outdoors.

One of my gals lays massive eggs for her size, and I find them to be decent layers. The eggs do have a shorter shelf life though, compared to other eggs.

The roosters do sound like little squeaky toys and are quieter, though higher pitched. The birds are also smaller so you can keep more in a smaller space, though they still greatly enjoy bigger spaces.

Also if unable to provide them outside access due to an epidemic sweeping the area, provide vitamin D supplements as well as giving them things to do to prevent boredom and the hens plucking the shiny tails off your poor roosters, such as dustbaths, romain lettuce leaves, stuffed bellpeppers, paper balls full of treats and scatter feeding.
Pros: Intelligent, precocious, tiny!
Cons: May need extra care as babies, good flyers
I got my chicks as 2-day-olds from a breeder. Beyond being sure the crumbles were ground a little finer for a week, they didn't need any special care. Right now they're almost a month old. They've been flying out of their tote for a good 10 days now. The tote is in my garden tub so they fly BACK into it to eat & sleep. They seem much smarter than the other Bantams/Silkies I have. They like to roost on the edge of the tote. They 'talk' to me every time I'm in the bathroom and don't seem to be fazed at all by my Toy Poodle, who is *fascinated* with them!!

Pros: Small, Pretty, Docile, and Quiet
Cons: Not cold heardy
I got my first pair of Seramas for only $25 from a man who was getting out of raising chickens. She was a great layer and would lay for weeks strait! When I got them they had not been socialized and would not let you get any where near them. It was amazing how quickly that turned around though!!! I really didn't want a rooster so I found him a home, and kept her. While both of them them became very friendly the female was so friendly she became a house chicken!!! She would site on your shoulder and watch TV with you or with me she would sit in my lap and fall asleep

She would follow you around the yard and loved hanging out with the cat, or the dogs when she's inside. I LOVE seramas!!!!!

Pros: Sweet, beautiful, personable, smart, little clowns
Cons: Quality birds are pricey, hatching eggs a bit more delicate, you'll want a billion
Getting good looking Serama for breeding is a task and a half since you have to wade through a lot of information and be willing to pay high prices on pairs or chance-y eggs, but if you are looking for a fun and personable bird to work with they are worth it! If you just want a pet quality bird, they can be hard to find locally but they're as inexpensive as anything else. I love the rooster's tiny crows (though they are shrill,) and how all of them march around like they're on a mission to get where they're going. Their bravado is too big for their bodies to comical effect. They are smart and grow easily attached at the hip to their people, even birds raised hands off can become the friendliest in the flock with a little love. Anyone who likes to have chickens just for fun should have a Serama or two!

Pros: Low Maintenance, aesthetically pleasing
Cons: none
I started with these little birds about 3 years ago and it has been challenging and very rewarding.
Pros: Go broody often
Make great mothers
Lay rather frequently
Very beautiful
Don’t take up as much space as an LF
Tend to hatch early
Quieter crows
Cons: More fragile to cold
More fragile to heat
Expensive
More frequent crows
They can’t be AMAZING birds, and don’t get me wrong, they are my favorite. They aren’t very what or cold tolerant and they are rather expensive (for a reason, of course). Thing is, they are great birds, and I have never had a problem in all my time raising them. They grow up with LF chicks sometimes, and they do extremely well!

Pros: Smaller bird takes up less space and less feed, comes in many colors, and has a big personality. Makes a great pet or a show bird!
Cons: Not very cold hardy. Have to really educate yourself before buying to be able to recognize good type. Some people have trouble hatching eggs.
Ask me and Ill tell you all about them! Feel free to PM me and Ill share all the info I have absorbed over the years! :) You will love them!

Pros: Friendly, beautiful array of colors, tiny, frizzles & silkied
Cons: not really cold tolerant... but that gives you an excuse to bring them in the house!
I just got a silkied pair and the hen especially is so tiny I can hardly believe she's real! They are also the friendliest, sweetest chickens I have ever owned. They actually seek out attention and if I give one too much attention the other gets upset! I was cuddling my rooster and the cage door was open, and the hen jumped out and made herself at home on my lap. The number of beautiful colors out there is astounding, and there are frizzles and booted as well as silkied and smooths! I my next will be a frizzle, I think. They are too cute!

Pros: sweet and very tame. The rooster's are like a cartoon version of a standard size.
Cons: They do not tolerate cold well so they need some extra care.
I received two rooster's and a beautiful hen off of freecycle. The woman was going out of the country and needed them to go to a new home "like yesterday". I was instantly in love! I really don't think I could have to many. I now have 3 rooster's and two hens. Unfortunatly I didn't have the $ to get more because they are so expensive. I recently purchased an incubatore and I am currently doing a test run. If everything goes well I will get eggs to hatch. I don't think anything in the world (besides my kids) could be cuter than a serama chick. Oh also my little man Harold goes to the coffee shop with me and sits in their nice sunny garden and crows for everyone. They love it and the little kids love that they are able to pet him.

Pros: Eat very little
Cons: Not good at evading predators
They are exactly as people say they are. Unique tiny chickens who belong in a cage. I have one Cockerel with no female to be caged with so I am attempting to get him into a free range flock and so far he just sticks close to the coop and more time at the feeder than others his age. He had a few stand offs with other Cockerels and held his own.
Pros: Small size means less food, less mess, less space required plus more cuteness!
Surprisingly plucky birds, not as meek as their size would suggest
Can be very friendly
Cons: Vulnerable to predators, don't mix well with large fowl
My serama pullet is a fantastic bird. Friendly, docile, beautiful, and yet also brave, intelligent and curious. She follows me around and sleeps on my lap, a true pet chicken. Needs extra care and considerations because of her tiny size but the reward is more than worth it.
Pros: Tiny, Compact, Friendly, Broody, Quiet Crowing
Cons: Malaysians can have back problems (American Okay), Can be wild when not socialized, Poor Layers
I've only owned 1 serama hen and I still have her. She's such a joy to be around. She's housed with three other bantams: 1 Silver Sebright Rooster,1 Golden Sebright Hen and a Black Tailed White Japanese. She is third in the pecking order, but sometimes second. When I got Bottle-Cap she's was wild, she came from someone is Northern Utah and I traded my turkeys for her + $30 and the original price of the turks was $35, so this banty just costed me $5. Here's her picture, and she's tame now.

Cons: Flighty
I love seramas! I think it's a great beginner bird! They are Sweet, Pocket sized, Easy to house, and Easy to train! The Serama was one of my first chickens.... I fell in love with them! I had to get more! My first one was a pullet and at the moment is now a hen. So I set off to find a rooster! I luckily found a rooster and housed him with my hen, But we have close neighbors. Luckily a very great thing about the serama is that the roo's crow is not loud at all! I am now a lovely Serama breeder!

Pros: very sweet, great with kids and other animals, they have their own great personality .
Cons: i have none
1 of many great tiny chickens..Can't wait to get more and start showing them off.. just a wonderful add to your flock and or a inside pet too.. they are so small that its easy to clean up after them.. the roo's crows make you lol every time..they lov to fly if they have the room to..they prefer small areas like stayn in the coop but they do adjust to free ranging in the yard..Its better if you buy a set of them.. but i lov hatching my chickens.. so they know me very well.. I received 13 eggs. 9 where fertile and 9 hatched.. 5 roo's and 4 ladie's.. i had to give a roo away tho.. had to many..as of 2 days ago my ladie's are now tiny hens..

Pros: Goes Broody easily
Great Personality
Quiet crows
Small eggs (Could be a con but they are great for gifts as people are so fascinated about them)
CUTE!!!
Cons: Bad layers
Gets mites often
Gets worms often too
I have a little gal who is so sweet. She came from a home who didn't pay too close attention to the birds so she was labeled as shy and skittish. As I worked with her I learned how sweet she was and she had a big personality. The roosters are super sweet and I love their colouring. My favourite was a Serama Frizzle who was very pretty. Overall I highly recommend these birds for those who want not many eggs and for a city house!
