Sussex

The Sussex was developed in Sussex County, England over 100 years ago. It was famous...
Pros: lays every day. Good natured and beautiful
Cons: small eggs
Coco seemed to be very independent and great forager from day one. We didn't give her enough attention, so be sure to give your Sussex lots of tactile stimulation from day one. She is the biggest bird but at the bottom of the four chick pecking order. I would equate her to the fat girl being bullied in school. We give her lots of attention now and she thinks she is a inside (the house) chick. She stands at the back door and knocks, with her beak. So cute. Our Dominique was our favorite until several months ago, and then it was like a switch flipped in her, and now she is aggressive and literally bites us so hard that she draws blood. She used to sit in my lap all the time and let me love on her. She is third in the pecking order and really picks on Coco.
I wonder if there is a way to influence the establishment of the pecking order??????
Pros: Good layer, friendly, active
I have one speckled sussex that is a very good layer of 5-6 eggs a week. Mine happens to lay smaller eggs, but I know thats not standard for the breed and I have no problem tolerating it for such a friendly bird. She's the first to come running when the back door opens and will be the first to pick stuff out of my hand. The only cons I have for this bird is that she's a bit loud and the eggs are smaller but both of those vary bird to bird, so its not a con to the breed. If i had to pick one bird to build an entire flock around, this breed would definitely be in the running.

Pros: Good egg layers, easy to handle, very friendly, good looking birds.
Cons: It can be hard to tell some of them apart.
I started out with 9 of this amazing chicken unfortanutly one died. They have an amazing colorfull feathers, which can make them hard to tell apart and name. They are very good brown egg layers. They are also super super friendly they fgollow you around every where. From what I have they seem to be good setters as well, at the moment I have two setting. I would deffantly recomend them to anyone.

Pros: good layers
Cons: none
these girls are calm, good layers, follow you around curious and great foragers.
Pros: Very friendly
Cons: Sometimes TOO friendly
My SS is a gorgeous bird, she lays nice eggs consistently, and is an easy keeper. Since I raised her from an egg she knows me extremely well which can be an issue. If she is feeling sassy she will try to flog me. She pecks me too... But she always runs to me to pick her up and get petted unlike the other chickens. I think that they are jealous chickens since she only pecks me if im ignoring her. All of the SS's ive had have been relatively the same way.
