    Ringneck Doves Make Great Pets

There are so many great things & reasons to own a laughing dove! They're less messy, inexpensive, aren't high maintenance, usually quiet (unless you have a pair or a male), not destructive, great with kids & for first time bird owners, long lived (15-20+ yrs), hardy, bond with their...

    Silkie doves?

I have a goregous & very special violet-neck silkie named Haven. VNs are supposed to have violet on their head & chest with a white ringneck & body. He is unique because in addition to his color mutation, he has 2 tangerine tipped feathers. I asked several breeders about this strange occurrence...

Comparing store bought eggs vs eggs from your girls

I was talking to my old neighbor over the phone & telling them how much I miss their eggs. I asked them if they ever compared theirs to the ones you get at the grocery store both visually & in taste. They hadn't until a week ago when they got "Eggland's Cage-free". They couldn't believe the...

    Chantecler vs Buckeye

I'm still curious between the two as well since I'm pondering the same question. Both seem to be superb winter layers, great foragers, broody, good mothers, can withstand against harsh winters, have a wonderful temperment, & hardy. The only downside to me is the size of the egg they both lay...

Too many chicken breeds to choose from! Result: CHICKEN ADDICTION!!!

Ever since my old neighbors had chickens, I wanted to start a little flock of my own, but I can't ever make up my mind about which breed I want. I'm sure everyone has/had this problem, & when you do finally start one, it grows!! The result: CHICKEN ADDICTION!!! You start off with one or so...

How many eggs do you get from your winter layers?

My old neighbors had all three breeds too among 4 other breeds. They suspected that their NHRs or SLWs was laying during the winter. I'm looking to get Buckeyes or Chanteclers for my winter layers.

Who sells their guinea eggs & meat?

I did find one farm in Spencer, Indiana that sells eggs. Red Rosa Farm is selling 1/2 dz for $9 & 1dz for $15. I'm not sure how they're raised or what they're fed, but holy heck, what a profit! Guinea meat I've seen goes for $30 for a whole, organic, free range bird.

    Chickens or Guineas?

Both are great at pest control, but each one has a slight advantage over the other in certain areas of expertise. I don't have guineas or chickens yet, but when it comes to certain pests, being an alarm call to danger, & helping you get rid of those nasty bugs in your garden (they are much less...

    Why raise meal worms?

I had neighbors that raised chickens, & at first I was buying big buckets of roasted ones to hand them out for treats. That was $30 a pop, & found it was MUCH cheaper to raise some (they're not hard to raise either!). They always looked forward to my visits, & one day, while I was giving them...

How many eggs do you get from your winter layers?

Any person who raises chickens knows that there are many breeds out there who are good at laying eggs during the winter & some that excell at it. What breeds do you have & how many eggs do you get a week/ everyday? (I'm thinking about getting Chanteclers or Buckeyes for winter production)

Who sells their guinea eggs & meat?

I'm going to raise guineas soon for pest control, watchdogs, & for their meat/ eggs. I have several friends, my fiance's co-workers, & both sides of the family really exited for the meat & eggs. How much would/ do charge for them? I don't mind giving the eggs for free, but several of them have...

    Same neighbor different dog!

My neighbor's have chickens and a husky. They have only lost 1 bird from a hawk and as a result try to shoot any hawk any chance they get. BUT, their husky has killed 7 of their chickens and just yell at her! I think they should just either be more responsible controling their dog and/or...

Neighbor free range chickens eating where they poop

I allow my neighbors chickens to come over and free range in my yard until they did the same exact thing. I politely asked them if they could keep them penned up in their run for awhile until the grass grows back. As for the birdfeeder problem, I just put up some fencing around my feeders. It...

    Show off your Wellie eggs!!

My phone is a dinosaur and doesn't take great pics, but yes, they were a bit darker. They also aren't from high quality lines either, but from a hatchery (Purely Poultry). I no longer have these beautiful birds because I am moving but plan to get a stock from good lines instead from a commerical...
