As I haven't been able to find it locally, I have had to order Purina Gamebird Startena for my pet quail via eBay. The latest order arrived with a LOT of "powder" in it. In other words, a lot of it is NOT in the little chunks that my adult quail can eat, but has been pulverized to powder...
You can get a thing called a "flight suit" for your quail that is constructed with a pouch under the bird's vent to catch the poo, that the bird can wear when out of the cage. Several places make or carry them and you can measure your bird to find out the size.
That being said, I have not...
I found a YouTube video of Gambel quail eating and running around, making noises -- I play that for my little guy once or twice a week when he's out and he loves it, gets all excited, runs around looking behind everything for "those quail", LOL! Wonder if it's the same one you use ....
It might be a little intimidated with the height -- if what you've put in there has not been slanted too steeply, it should be able to get itself down all right when it's ready. Maybe just enjoying the view and feeling like Top Bird meanwhile!
You could also see about luring it down with...
About a year and a half ago, I ended up with an "abandoned" baby Gambel Quail chick, and from reading up online at the time, I learned that once they have become separated from their family covey like that, they won't survive if released alone into the wild when they are older. They are "covey"...
If you have a Habitat for Humanity store anywhere near, check them out -- ours carries a bunch of incandescent bulbs ... maybe construction contractors donate them now and outfit new homes with the CFLs, don't know, but it's a good place to look and they are cheap.
For my guy, I used a panel of one of those "pop-up" style mesh hampers to cover the opening I cut in the top of his cage. There is some nice "give" to them and the little holes allow both light and air in. If carefully cut from the hamper, there is a metal strip inside a seam that will remain...
I have a Gambel -- Coco -- and he is a year old this month. My answers to some of your questions are based on my observations and experiences with him.
With Coco, I initially had him in a large glass aquarium with a screen top. He had a toy duck made of flannel (a dog toy) and I set it so...
LOL! Or maybe should just be "LO" :)
I should perhaps have been more specific -- I know it's quail poop too, but wondering why it is all white, that size, and does it mean he needs something in his diet or is getting too much of anything?
When I clean my Gambel's cage, I notice something in the litter that I am curious about. His typical poo is mostly brown with a little bit of white attached, occasionally all brown (and larger) with no white. What I'm seeing in his litter are little "balls" of just white -- they are rounded...
Agree your pens are beautiful! I'm wondering about the "height factor" for an aviary, though ... you didn't have problems with them flushing and hitting their heads because they had enough overhead room to build up speed?
My quail is an indoor pet, and he likes to investigate "everything". On a few occasions, when there has been some paper or Kleenex tissue lying around, he has gone after that to peck at it, and before I could remove it he has peeled off a little bit and swallowed it. So far, he doesn't seem to...
My quail is a Gambel's, very similar to a California, and I've had him since either the day he hatched or the day after. As a baby, he was very tame and liked to cuddle in my hands, would fall asleep there. As he has grown up, he doesn't much like to cuddle -- he's very curious about things...
