Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Welcome back Shad! They just love to eat an egg that has no other purpose than to get eaten since it has no shell. Egg white and yolk = food. A week ago I took out 2 eggs and laid them on the coop roof with the intention to take them inside as soon as I finished filling up feed and changing...

Topic of the week - Chicken run management

Depends on the size and breed. Calm and friendly chickens need less space than game or flighty breeds. The bigger the run, tbe better for the soil and their health. My run is 15m2 net covered and 1.5 m2 roof covered for 8 bantams. Possible, not optimal. Thats why I let them free range too. A...

Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I miss the updates from Shad and all news and reactions of the followers. Over here our garden is exploding with all the rain from last week. Chicken are now on their favourite spot under the overhang where they have a 180° view into the garden. From inside, lousy photos. Ini mini, Janice...

🐣 What Kind of Chicken Parent Are You?

Please check if this feed is complete feed. The organic mixed grains I buy is not. Chickens need to free range the whole day in a rich environment (bugs and plants) to complete the needed nutrition. I give organic grower/chick feed, layer pellets and oyster-flakes in separate containers, to...

i somehow acquired 2 runaways and i have questions. please help

Not a bad idea at all. Unless those farms all have normal sized chickens. I looked for breeders on various platforms in the past. Maybe my experience helps you to find a breeder of bantams in Ireland not to far away from your town/village. Many breeders don’t mind to separate the cockerels and...

i somehow acquired 2 runaways and i have questions. please help

This is why our neighbours have a mini pig. They went to the vet with their cat and encountered a girl there who had a sweet pinkish present for her b’day. She couldn’t keep the mini-pig in their city home and asked if anyone knew someone who could keep a mini pig. My neighbour is a softy...

    Socializing pullets into flock

Add /connect another playhouse, a hutch with a roost or a small coop to the current playhouse or run. They need a safe place where they can go to roost. Another possibility is to make the playhouse bigger, add roost space and a second entrance. Maybe divide the space until they get used to...

Chicken oddities: what’s something you wish your chicken/chickens didn’t do?

This neighbour cat doesn’t hunt at all. Maybe she prefers vegetarian food. ;)

i somehow acquired 2 runaways and i have questions. please help

Maybe it’s easier to buy hatchery eggs ? If you try to contact a breeder in advance and if you have an address, you can lay 4-5 fake eggs in the nestbox. See if one of your bantams gets broody , sits for a few days on a row. If she does, collect the eggs (better than mail) mark the eggs and...

Chicken oddities: what’s something you wish your chicken/chickens didn’t do?

My neighbours have a cat that sneaks into the run /coop to steal the chickens feed when the run /coop doors are open.

Chicken oddities: what’s something you wish your chicken/chickens didn’t do?

I had similar problems with my juveniles at roost time. Even though they were hatched by a broody in the coop. Finally (after 4/5 hatches) I decided to add another coop to the run. It solved all problems. I wish I had bought this playhouse (conversion) a few years ago.

🐣 What Kind of Chicken Parent Are You?

Don’t count on your current thoughts about chickens. :p Many chicken owners get the chicken math fever within a year. Other owners fall in love and spoil their chickens to the limit. And unfortunately there are a few who had a bad experience and stopped completely. 🤔

🐔 Hens 8+ Years Old - What Contributed to Their Longevity?

All the factors you name are important except one. Deworming is not necessary if your chickens live on healthy soil and have enough space. My oldest is 11. I have 2 who are 10 yo. Dutch Ini mini my oldest was not bought from a price winning breeder but from a hobbyist. The two 10 yo (Black...

In your flock, what is the average lifespan of your hens?

Multi generational includes middle aged and elderly too IMO. You are right that they can be grandparents if you kill your chickens at the age of 3, but chickens are capable to live with approx 8 generations. Your way is fine. But other people like to keep chickens as long as they are healthy...
