How is your Duck?
For the Tums, you can cut it in half then give her 1 piece at a time is if you wish. Tums don't mix well with water, so I give it whole or in pieces. Basically, whatever method you can find to get the calcium into her is the best method:)
Was she able to...
Just a couple of things I wanted to point out from what I read
It's pretty dangerous to intentionally break anegg inside of the duck, egg shells can be sharp and can cut them inside
Instead of doing this, you may want to try (I know it's been suggested already) giving the hen a dose of...
I can't say for certain. Usually it is recommend to have calcium gluconate for eggboundand calcium citrate is better for soft shelled eggs. But some ducks do better with one versus the other sometimes. The main thing is the calcium helps stimulate proper contraction of the muscles, helping...
Oh, yes! My poor Runner was having trouble passing anegg. She was laying down and panting. She was in a lot of pain, and I thought she wouldn't make it. A couple of days of gluconate, and she finally passed her egg. It was easy to administer, too. I am sold on this stuff.
I’m very sorry you are going through this. How did the other ducks die? What are you feeding Perdita? Is she eating and drinking normally? When she walks are her legs still splayed? Have you ever supplemented her with niacin? Ducks usually need extra niacin than feeds supply throughout their...
It does sound like she is having difficulty laying anegg. It is not uncommon for Pekins to have soft shelled egg issues. To treat eggboundducks, you can give her calcium gluconate. It is sold at TSC. It says injectable, but we administer it orally in a syringe. You give her 1 ml 2 times a day...
Thats very helpful thank you!!!! really thank you... When it happened with the runner duck who were 2 years old girl (the first time I hatched from thous girls)I was huge concerned. Then the geese yep my mind knows there small eggs and geese ask for help I did respond this time.
My first...
Hi she only passed 1 last night but I know there's more so I went & bought the calcium gluconate now I just need to know exactly howto give it to her orally. Can I out it in the water bowl or do I have to give it to her through a syringe? & I read somewhere you have to be very precise with how...
I don't have personal experience -- my flock is all drake -- but I read about it as I have half a notion of setting up a duck sanctuary or muscovy haven.
Some sanctuaries do use the injection so that they are not swamped in eggs or ducklings.
I think for a duck with your girl's history...
It sounds like she may be having trouble laying anegg. You can't always tell if they are eggbound. Depending on where the egg is you may or may not be able to feel it. You can put a finger up her vent and feel for anegg, but again you may not find one. Giving her a long bath can help with the...
Thank you for the encouragement. I need to stop stressing, but all I can imagine is coming home and having to start all over because she opens it up again.
Today is not hot for a change. But she is really panting. That makes me wonder what’s going on. She’s done that off and on since we adopted...
I agree, I don't think this is niacin deficiency.
I had a duck like this that was young (about ~7 months old) and it ended up being a broken spine that healed incorrectly (no idea how it happened).
On another note, I would be curious if she was eggbound. Things get pretty cramped in there...
Thanks a lot for your reply. Uh the vent in the picture looks really painfull - did she ever recover fully?
Yeah the grey tissue is what really worries me the most. Maybe it took me to long to discover the prolaps and the grey tissue is dried skin..😔
Another thing you were talking about...
Goodness. When it rains, it pours. I've been dealing with the aftermath of a shipping disaster and another duck with bumblefoot. Now another duck is in peril.
My Runner, Figgy, seems to be having trouble laying eggs. A month or so ago, she was eggbound. 3 days of intensive calcium...
I would LOVE if that were available! I have a duck who I have to get implants for because she lays internally. $600 every 6 months. And I have a pullet who has a hard time passing eggs because of a skeletal deformity. Too bad feeding my birds the feeds in question hasn't stopped any of them from...
I'm sorry My computer has been off and on so I have been hit or miss.
Do you know how she may have been injured? When my Muscovy was egg-bound she wasn't out foraging she was laying off by herself. I don't know if this is the norm but when eggbound they spend a lot of time in the nest trying to...
I don’t know if you caught my post from yesterday about the egg that she laid yesterday being shiny? Do you think this could have any thing to do with it? I posted a photo of her normal looking egg as well as the shiny one.
When I was giving her the Baytril pills, I just tucked it inside a...
The necrotic tissue was gray. It felt very spongy like. If they are scabs, they will fall off in time. It may just be scabs from it hitting the ground when prolasped. The pale tissue to me is a bit concerning, but I don't know enough to tell you what it means. That is a good sign the swelling...
