...that I found, but the now 5 week chicks love to scatter it all out. Some of it gets eaten but I always end up throwing most of it away.
So fermenting is supposed to not only help it stretch further but as a mash it will make it hard for them to be picky (and the fermentation might make them...
Hi! I want to try fermenting feed for my chickens but read somewhere it's not for all feed types. Can you ferment Kalambach Henhouse reserve? How do you know when it's done fermenting?
How and what you will need to make fermented feed:
NOTE: The times I have made fermented feed I have used Pellet feed I presume that other feeds will work too.
Making fermented feed is very simple the things you will need will be:
- A quart jar with a lid (like a Mason jar)
- A spoon
- Pellet...
...in terms of nutrition. I have chick crumble (20% protein) I got for them and I'm wondering if it would make it easier for them to eat if I fermented the food? It's not as relevant right this second for first foods, but for my next batch, I'd like to know if there are benefits to fermenting...
I was wondering how to make fermented feed. I only want to make a small amount nothing bigger than about 3 gallons, and how to make in in Southern Iowa in the winter.
Ugh! I was rolling through life on a comfortable and easy to follow fermenting schedule--and my 6 sweet girls were all benefiting from it. The three-day routine was working like a charm as I would fill, stir, and shift the three large mason jars along my countertop. Then disaster struck: The...
...end up with 8, it depends. Anyway, with the price of feed bills, I have been searching for ways to cut the prices, and I saw someone suggest fermenting chicken pellets/crumbles. I know NOTHING on this topic, but it seems like a lot of work when I could just fill up a big feeder and leave it...
...for a couple days. They love it and think they are getting a treat- and they come running to us❤️. I made it in a jar and leave on the counter. Yesterday it was bubbling a little so I think it’s fermenting. Should I throw this out and start fresh with a smaller amount? It’s medicated feed. TIA.
Unfortunately you are way off there. It is alcoholic. I have just now ingested a tiny little amount of the fluid that the chicken feed is fermenting in and it went straight to my head. I have fermented this food since yesterday morning which makes it about 30 hours. I took the food away from the...
@Perris , a friend of mine is fermenting crumble and gives a portion of this to her chickens daily.
I told her fermenting whole wheats (grain mix) is more beneficial. But she doesn’t believe me and I didn’t have a good explanation why fermenting crumble has no/very little extra value compared to...
Morning, all, or whatever time it is on this lovely planet where you live!
Our 14 1/2 week pullets are on fermented Kalmbach Chickhouse Reserve, a whole grain/ mash-type feed. We all love it; hardly any waste, and they are thriving. But while trudging through the rain with their bowls of glop...
Actually @Altairsky has said it better than I have, here

When it's fermented, it's more than dampened. It actually goes through a bit of a chemical change over several days via fermentation, which often changes the bioavailability of the ingredients. That's what it works so well on whole-grain feeds - it can make the seed shells more digestible...
Hello all,
I have 27 chickens in my main flock, and they free range all day. I ferment feed for them and split it between 2 meals, but I want to be sure they are getting enough.
After fermenting, there is around 5lbs or more of feed. I add in RPF, egg shells, oats, herbs, and ACV sometimes...
Hi, everyone!
I am new here. I have been reading posts for a while and have started fermenting my chicken feed. Thanks for all the great information!
Initially, I fed my chicks a mash starter feed that had some corn but was soy free. I later gave them a mash layer feed that contained corn but...
I don't think so...
You have set up an anaerobic fermentation process. That forms alcohol as the primary byproduct.
You need to convert to an aerobic fermentation. You need to leave the ferment open to air and mix it well to incorporate oxygen and release the gaseous byproducts.
I've been...
Hi all, I added 5 new chooks this year to my 4. I’ve always fermented. I have it down to a science, been great. But I only had 4 and now there’s 9. Winters have always been a challenge. Less challenging with 4 lol. But now the temps have dipped into negatives and I cannot keep the food from...
Yeah, pretty sure that's fermented. You have to mix it daily. If parts of it is whole you could try sprouting them. And you may try fermenting anyway and see if they change their minds if they get hungry enough.
