2 story coop---forced roost will they learn?

The whole thing is really secure with hardware cloth on the bottom. I'm more worried about them being cold. Headcount is easy, there are only 3!

2 story coop---forced roost will they learn?

I am in a situation where I need to put my chickens into a bigger coop with some urgency so someone can care for them as I need to go away for a few days. They can't stay in the smaller, outdoor brooder and their real coop is not ready yet. The other outdoor brooder was all one level and...

Taming trio with "aggressively" friendly ringleader

That's a great idea. I've been feeding them from the brooder door, but no reason not to take them all out and have fun.

Taming trio with "aggressively" friendly ringleader

That's how I started. They now like my hand, which I saw as an improvemnt

Taming trio with "aggressively" friendly ringleader

So the one who is bossy about treats won't hinder the other 2? I do drop some for the other two. Star is warming up, but the Buff is about as sharp as a spoon though and hasn't gotten the picture at all.

Taming trio with "aggressively" friendly ringleader

We had a devastating weasel attack late last fall when my fall babies were about 2 months old. It got under a 1.5 foot skirt. It got both fall babies and one of my big girls. I rehomed my dear other chicken so she wouldn't have to over winter alone. I'm thrilled to be starting again. I have...

Adding feisty fall baby to my flock.

They have PLENTY of space. They are in no danger of having too little space. They have a 2.5x8 elevated coop with a loft and a 12x12 run. The babies are in a 4x3 coop with no real run. I'm going to make a faux door that only the smaller ones can get through. The feeder is automatic and...

Adding feisty fall baby to my flock.

No worries. I appreciate that. It is a good idea and should always be the first thing to do. I started here with ducks and I understand them so much better.

Adding feisty fall baby to my flock.

Yes, as I said in my first line, they've been in parallel for 2 weeks now. They can see each other and I've even hung a treat that they all can reach. The babies were in a small coop near the house at about 6 weeks and Penny and Ash were able to be around them since then when they free-ranged...

Adding feisty fall baby to my flock.

    Laying? Really?

They will be a year Jan 20. I have 2. Our temps have been ludicrously low. Nights going down to -8 and days that don't hit the double digits. Will be this way for a week or more. They stopped laying in November when they molted....which was what I expected given the ducks. But now they...

    Laying? Really?

I have to say, this is my first chicken venture. The ducks were a bit more "reliable" season after season and they didn't make me worry about frozen eggs!

    Laying? Really?

I think the "fat" is mostly feathers, especially on the RIR. She's incredibly poofy. I was just happy because she looked so TERRIBLE molting. I had ducks for many years before I got these chickens and they never ever looked as bad as a molting chicken.

    Laying? Really?

I'm in New England where we've been dealing with zero, near zero and sub-zero temps. Chickens are fat and happy. Today, when I went out to feed them I found eggs. I don't mess around with their coop in this cold and realized they've been laying for at least a couple days. Eggs were frozen...

Maybe not "henny" Penny? 6.5 weeks- RIR

Thanks. I was told that the RI reds and the Barred rocks are supposed to be the same size. Penny looks huge compared to Ashy, and it's all happened in the last week or so....should I be worried about my BR's lack of growth? Penny was initially slightly smaller than Ashy.

Maybe not "henny" Penny? 6.5 weeks- RIR

Henny Penny is my crazy, lovable chick who was escape artist cuddle bug extroidnaire. I was told the dot on the head assured female but a sudden growth spurt makes Henny look a little Roo-like. Penny 3 days old (above) 3 weeks old (below) Penny 6.5 weeks (below)

    Can laser light hurt chickens?

It's actually a tiny gecko reptile lamp. The balance of the heat is really well managed. I took the pad out because it was too hot for them and left the red light the other night so I was worried about if they were warm enough. They were very poofed up, cuddled together and unhappy with...

    Can laser light hurt chickens?

So I have an open-air brooder, it's near a window. We keep the house low 60's. They have a heating pad below and a red light above. I test using my husband's infrared sensor. It's a cheap tool and it has a fairly cheap laser to point on what you want to know the heat of. The chickens...

    Devil chicks?

They are now totally chill. Hubby asked if they were ok. The RIR can't get through the bars now and so I was able to remove the fortress around their cage. They like to come out to play but are being a bit resistant to being handled, I'm going to work on that a bit with them tomorrow.
