As usual, it's the people who haven't tried that tell you it's impossible. I haven't been here for awhile, but just came back to say I just saw a mother quail with some chicks in my field. I haven't released any quail since May 2014 so this mother is either offspring of what I released or has...
Campines have very sharp and thin spurs. I've always got a few too many roosters and they often fight especially in the spring until they get the pecking order settled. That was the only time I had a fatality like that though.
I lost a hen to a huge rough legged hawk about two weeks ago. I knew it wasn't one of the usual species I see, I had to look it up in a field guide. I moved the carcass out into the middle of the field and the thing came back and fed off it for a week. Maybe some northern raptors are coming...
Anyone in or near Brown County want some roosters? I've got at least 4 young roosters about 8 months old, I'd like to get rid of. They are brahma/wyandotte/sussex mixes
Absolutely, I did plantings and controlled burns for several years before I started reintroducing bob whites, and I even had decent habitat to begin with. I highly recommend Rosene's book " Bob White Quail" the amounts of factual data he collected of the years and across the country is amazing...
You guys got me interested, I've looked for about an hour on the internet and haven't found a good answer (although one internet expert says they can live up to 5 years in captivity ). What I did find amusing were the long winded replies to this question elsewhere online that never actually...
My area was depleted of bobwhite quail entirely. My area has decent habitat, but I've spent years improving it with different plantings and controlled burns.
People who tell you it can't be done are just going by what they've read online.
Here's a video from the first year. I've since added silt fencing around the bottom edge and a hot wire about 3 foot high.

Habitat is essential. I think that may be why some fail. Get Rosene's book, he tells you everything in a...
I have a large flight cage (15x40x15). I raise about 100 bob white each year. I keep them through the winter, collect eggs in the spring and release the mature chicks mid-spring. Then I incubate another 100 and start over. Last summer I saw three separate broods of a mother with chicks, so yes...
